Recently got a pop up message on my Dell Inspiron 620 computer saying "A hard drive is reporting a Smart event" this from what I can find out indicates the condition of your hard drive and after checking this message out from several sites on line is a reliable report. The message says "all files may be lost and your system may becomes unusableâ€
I did run chkdsk which did not indicate any problems. My computer is still running normally however I understand it could quit anytime.
I have been keeping a "system image" on a separate HD so files are current on this disk.
I did go ahead and ordered a replacement internal hard drive which I will be getting shortly.
After I install the new drive what would be the next steps to get my backup image onto the new HD ?
I don't know if the new one comes already formatted. Also does the system image replace any info on the new HD ?
Would appreciate some guidance doing this. Computer is running Windows Home Premium 7
    Thanks, Budo

Did you try running the manufacturer of the HDD diagnostic tool?

Yes it is a Seagate drive and on the SMART test it failed and on the Short Generic Test it passed.
This was a Seagate test downloaded from their web site.

    Update

Well I guess the warning message was serious. My Hard Drive did quit
However I had been keeping a Disk Image using the Microsoft program in Windows 7. The replacement drive arrived and when installed we booted the new drive with a system repair disk, went in the control panel to system security - back up your computer then restored the system image to the new HD and in about an hour and a half the process completed. On reboot my system came back up on the new HD just as it was with the last system image I had made. All operated as it should ! What a great feeling to see that on occasion something works as it's suppose to. Thanks Microsoft :D
