    Hello,

I have a NEC LCD 1712 monitor, and using a Radeon HD 4650 graphics card from Vision Tek,. I recently installed a couple of games on my PC, and when I tried to run the game, I recieved an "OUT OF RANGE" error message, and the PC froze up.

I know this is not good for my monitor, I'm sure, but why does it happen, and how can I fix it so it won't happen again. This only happens when trying to play certain games. It is very frustrating, and I have no clue as to how to correct the problem. Any help would be great appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Sandie

This could be for several reasons. You don't mention what game/games you are having a problem with. Did you Google out of range" error message in game play and look at the different answers with different games? Could also be the refresh rate is set to low on your monitor.

    Hello Mr. Bill,

One of the games I was trying to play was called "Hide," and "Inside." They were free game downloads from CNET/downloads that I had read about in Gismo's Freeware newsletter. Fun games for the Halloween season, and since I like "scary" movies and games, I thought it might be fun. I already own and love "Amnesia, The Dark Descent." So I downloaded the games, and tried to play them.

Both games, when fist opened, I immediately received the message "out of range" on a black screen, and the computer froze up. All I want to do is play the game, and they are combatible with Windows 7, so I don't understand the error message or why it happened.

This is all I can relate about the incident, because after that, I rebooted, and removed both games from my PC. But I sure would like to know what went wrong, and how to avoid it in the future. I have a very good video card, and I did Google the error message. It took me to Gamehouse.com, and an article referring to that message claiming an LCD monitor is the cause of the problem.

If that is the case, and I do have an NEC LCD monitor, there must be some way to fix it. I'm sure everyone with LCD monitors would not be very happy if none of them could play video games because every time they tried, they received an "out of range" error message and a frozen computer.

If you can help, I would very much appreciate it.

    Thank you for responding,
    Sandie

Hi Sandie. Did you install the latest AMD Video Driver for the AMD Radeon HD 4650?

Maybe change the refresh rate of the monitor. Right click on a blank space on the desktop and then left click on Screen Resolution. Then in the next window click on Advanced Settings then next window click on the Monitor tab and change the refresh rate. This may or may not do it.

    Yes Mr. Bill,

Actually, my AMD video card updates automatically all the time. I just installed an update on Tuesday, so I know it's fully up to date.

That isn't what I was saying. You can change the refresh rate. The slower it is the worse it is. Have you ever seen on TV when you were looking at a computer monitor on there and it looked like black lines scrolling from the bottom to the top? Years ago, there were not many refresh rates to choose from and it was to slow as the naked eye couild see them. Go where I told you to go in my other post and make the refresh rate a higher number. Probably defaulted at 60 and you can move it up to 65 and see if that helps.

    I'm sorry Mr. Bill,

I misunderstood. The refresh rate is set at 70, and I can adjust it, but not sure how much yet. I will check into it and get back to you.

    Again, thank you.

OK. Most are adjustable and some are not. Have seen it both ways.

Hello Mr. Bill, (oh no!! :) )

    PROBLEM IS NOW RESOLVED

I found where to change the refresh rate, which was set at 60, so I upped it to 75. The game is working now, so you were right about how to fix it. Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help. Now I just have to figure out the best way to get through the game, but that is where the fun lies.

I am sorry I could not get back to you sooner, but I just didn't have the chance. Too busy till now. So I appreciate your patience with me too.

    Cordially,
    Sandie :)

Glad that you got it fixed. I usually bump it up like 5 at a time till I am satisified. You can mark this thread as RESOLVED now.

    Mr. Bill,

My program only allowed me to choose 1 of 3 settings. It was set at 60, and you had mentioned 75, and the three settings to choose from were 60, 70, 75. So I just chose the one you had mentioned. I was just glad that it worked. LOL

I have marked the thread as resolved. Had some confusion finding how, but I did eventually. :)

    Thanks for everything,
    Sandie
