    Hi,
I have a fast desktop PC comprising an Intel core i7 2600 processor, 8GBytes of DDR3 ram, a solid state disc and Win 7 64 bit.

I built it it to edit HD video (AVCHD) using Pinnacle Studio HD version 15.
The system works well, but is not as responsive as I would like when doing video edits.

My question is, would the performance improve if I increased the memory to say 16GBytes?

The files being edited can be up to 2GBytes in size.

    Thanks,
    Geoff

Looking at the spec there is no indication that the software is 64 bit.

If it is 32 bit then less than 4 GB RAM will be available to it.

Check where Pinnacle is installed - if in Program Files (x86) then it is 32 bit. Also check the RAM usage when Pinnacle is in full flow.

If indeed it is 32 bit then increasing the RAM would have no effect as the additional RAM will not be used.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.
Studio is filed under Program Files (x86) so must be a 32 bit program. I had assumed that because I was using Win7 X64, all programs would be able to access more than 4GBytes of RAM, but I am not a software expert. I previously checked the RAM usage and it was always less than 4GB when running Studio. Presumably I would be better off using a 64 bit editing program?
    Regards Geoff

PS I am currently using the onboard graphics on the ASUS motherboard. Surely this can't be a problem because when editing you see only a small low resolution video image??

No, that is not the case - 32 bit programs are subject to the 32 bit limitation on RAM of ~3.3 MB.

By way of example my system has 12 GB RAM running in triple channel - in Photoshop CS5 32 bit the Available RAM is 3255 MB and the recommended top limit for PS to use is 2343 MB.

OTOH in 64 bit PS CS5 the available RAM is 10950 MB and the recommended top limit for PS to use is 7884 MB. It makes a difference although I stick with CS5 32 bit because most of my plug-ins are not 64 bit compatible.

AFAIK video editing is both CPU and RAM intensive and on that basis a 64 bit video editing program would be the preferred choice and would utilise far more of your RAM.

I agree that the onboard graphics are unlikely to be an issue = as the specsstate ....

By today's standards that is a very low end card.

Thanks very much for the clarification.
I thought that 32 bit systems could address approximately 4GB of RAM (2 to the power of 32), or is there some other limitation?

I am not aware of any video editing software for home use that is 64 bit.

That is essentially correct, but some of the 4 GB is mapped/reserved for base use - depending on the system ~3.3 > ~3.5 GB is all that Windows 32 bit can use.

    All is explained here .....
