[Damaged USB Port(s) on Acer laptop]

I have an Acer laptop. It is the Aspire 5517. I run Windows 7. My daugher was using the USB ports to attatch to a printer. Not sure how but both USB ports are broke and cannot be used.I took the computer to a repair place and they said that the motherboard had to be replaced in order to have new USB ports and the cost would be $125 to $160.
I have no experience with hardware and am try to insure that this information is basically correct. I guess I though the port could be easily removed and replaced.

Hi Jerry Dunn. What happens when you attempt to use the USB ports in Windows 7?

Are there any errors in Device Manager?

Are the USB ports detected properly in the BIOS?

The USB cord will not even lock into the computer since the ports are damaged. There is no reading at all

Then if you can no longer fit a USB cable into the USB port because it was physically damaged then you will have to get the labtop serviced and most likely get the motherboard replaced.

There is nothing else that can be done other than you getting the motherboard replaced or buying a new labtop.

No need to bin an otherwise good laptop just for that...
Get yourself a PCMCIA 4 port cardbus off ebay and get your USB ports back.

I guess I have now....

Quite a poor spec really. Only 2 USB ports and not even a Gigabit LAN.

No Evan, they're not. And this is a Notebook - which explains the low spec.

Well spotted Neil... I hadn't spotted that till you pointed it out.

So I guess now - strictly speaking - I still haven't seen a laptop without a PCMCIA port

Its not often Arie gets it wrong....
