hey all, this has me baffled... i bought a 1.5 tb, wd elements external hard drive and i was trying to format it to nfts... i used a program and that program mess up the hard drive bad.. it feels like there is a virus on the hard drive, im not sure if thats possible. when i plug in the hard drive into windows, my computer reconizes that its plugged into the computer but when i click on it my computer becomes non responsive, if i right click and push format "freezes ". not the whole computer just the format function. but when i unplug the hard drive the format option pops up and continues normally... and it does this for any funtion i try, ie: properties, open, run as admin. they all freeze until i uplug it... the probelm im having is this... i know it can be fixed because after 8 to 9 hour of messing with it doing different things i fix the problem.... but as smart as i am i got rid of the program i had that mess up the hard drive but i downloaded the same one thinking it was a different one.... sigh.... im wondering if there are any tricks or a program that i can use to fix this problem. and even useing formatting programs they "freeze" until i unplug it

Hi jrose, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Since you can't seem to format the harddrive using the Windows format utility see if downloading and running the program KillDisk will allow you to format the harddrive with that utility.

If KillDisk can't format the harddrive within Windows then try burning the program to a CD/DVD and running the program from a CD/DVD which will hopefully allow you to format the harddrive using that method.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    @ evan

sorry about the system details, but i felt they were irrelevant, since ive tried this on multiple systems... my issue also persists to give me trouble even when i use other formmating programs. they freeze while loading until i unplug the hard drive...

Have you tried burning the KillDisk program to a CD/DVD and booting the computer using the CD/DVD and then formating the harddrive that way? Or does the harddrive cause KillDisk to freeze when you attempt to format it using the CD/DVD?

See if you can run Check Disk on the harddrive which should hopefully fix any errors on the drive and allow you to format it, Check your hard disk for errors.

Well if Check Disk didn't work and you still can't format the drive then I don't know what else to suggest.

I assume that at this point the harddrive is probably dead and you will have to get it replaced.
