[Resolved] Editing handycam movie

I borrowed a dcr-dvd300 Sony Handycam from a friend to record my daughter's baby shower. I would like to edit out the dead spots (nothing going on) but I cannot edit it in the recorder (user manual only has info about editing on computer) so I am trying to edit on the computer. Here is my problem

I tried to use Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe but I can't import the sound (have to upgrade for $50

I tried Windows Movie maker but it doesn't recognize .vob files. So, I renamed the main .vob to .mpg and imported it but it is only seven seconds long (the recording is about 40 minutes)

Is there any way I can get past this?

I'll try anyting but if I can't edit it then she'll get the raw video.

Have you tried converting the .vob file to something else. Here is how I might try to tackle your problem. I would use a program called Super http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html, it should be able to convert the .vob to either and .mpg or to a .wmv. From there Windows Movie Maker should be able to do what you want.

I know its been a while, I have the video converted and edited. Now I would like to find something to help me edit the audio. I want to remove some of my ramblings in the middle of the file. I guess I should have talked less during the filming and I wouldn't have to worry about it.......

Super is a really good program. I know that the audio portion of the movie file can be ripped seperately from the video and edited, thats no problem. But I've never tried to replace the original audio with an edited version. That could be a little tricky.

I'll need to do a little research.

What I will try to do first is use Super and get just the video, and save it. Then use Super again and get just the audio. When the audio is edited, it must remain the same length as the original. The Program I use for most audio editing is Blaze Media Pro (but its not free). It gives me the option of replacing selected sections with silence or what ever I want to put there.

Then Windows Movie Make should be able to converge the two files back together.

But I wonder if there is an easier way? Or if there is a free audio editor?

Thanks Ranger, I'll await your results. What I have been trying is Cyberlink (which came free with my system) (after I converted the video to AVI I was able to import the whole thing into Cyberlink). All I have been doing is changing the volume on the sections of the video to silence me...and placing background music in the silent areas. This is a video of my daughter's baby shower - the theme was Winnie The Pooh so I have put audio from the theme song and snippits from characters in those areas.

There is another way. VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod are the tools you'll need. Load the .avi file into VirtualDub. Then go to "file" and "save wav". It will make a copy of the audio portion of your video.

We can now edit the audio file using what ever program you want.

This is as far as I've got. I can not get VirtualDubMod to run on my computer. Its what we need to merge the two files. I keep getting a "kernel32" error, whatever that means.

And we don't need VirtualDubMod.

After you've edited your audio file open VirtualDub and open your file. Under "Video" select "Direct Stream Copy". Under "Audio" select "Full Processing Mode". Then select "audio from other file". Select your edited audio file.

Your done, finally under "File" select "Save As AVI". (just tried it, it works)

One word of caution, make sure you make a copy of the original file, just in case.

I tested this on a music video. I took the sound from a CD and added it to the music video. It was funny. A Blondie music video with AC/DC music.

The key is that the music file size needs to remain the same size as the original (time length). So when you edit out a portion, it needs to be replaced by something that has same amount of time as the part that was removed.

What are you using to edit the audio??

Audacity. I'm having a little trouble with it by am figuring it out. And I did find the wav needs to be the original size. but I can't seem to find a way to sync the sound with the video (there is a time lag between lips moving and sound). I tried avimux but couldn't get it to work right. Hit and miss but I am learning a lot.
