    Hi everyone. :)

Does java check for updates automatically? The reason I ask is because every four hours or so the cpu starts running like mad and I am unable to do anything until this stops; takes about two minutes on average.

I used the Ctrl-Alt-Del shortcut to bring up Windows Task Manager. Then when the cpu started running I checked Task Manager and saw that java is the culprit.

Some of my specs are: Well this is an HP OEM with XP SP3 installed. I have 256mb ram, 80GB hard drive and I don't know what else at the moment.

I have java version 6 update 13. If this does update automatically, can I turn it off?

Thanks. If you have any questions just ask.

Go to Control Panel, double click the Java icon, click on the update tab and uncheck the "Check for updates automatially" box. Wait and see if that helps.

Thanks JohnB. I did your suggestion, now I'll just have to wait and see.

If when you click on the Java Update Tab then click on the Advanced button. A window will appear allowing you to control the frequency, the day and the time of day of the update attempts. I have mine set to update monthly.

    Update:

JohnB. No go. Still having problems so I decided to uninstall and install a later version to see if that would help. It did some. Java still hogs my cpu but not as long as before. Less than one minute most instances.

Scout321x. I found what you suggested but it was on the update tab instead of the Advanced tab. I turned mine on to no update.

Broni. That has crossed my mind. I have scanned with every program I could find and zilch. Nothing ever found. No spyware, malware, virus, bug or spiritual demon. Also, since I down graded java there is no longer a java.exe in the task manager. Now when java hogs the cpu it does so under firefox.exe. It has to be java, I suspect, because firefox.exe never did this before.

Not only is my ram low but with only a 2.5gb processor and with all my programs wanting to automatically update tis a bit much for the comp. But I'm still hanging in there, barely. :)

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll also give the virus removal site a try.
