Not sure if this is posted in correct forum.

Yesterday I received my new HP Photosmart c7280 AIO wireless printer. The setup went pretty good. When I attempted to install the software from the disk, it gets to about 19% then I get the following error.

    Fatal Error During Installation

Could not write value HP software update to Key/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personal. Abt: Fatal Error and MSI.hpproduct assistant

I went to HP site, downloaded software from there. Same thing and error at about 18-19%. I called HP Tech support and was on phone with him for 5 hours last night. He took remote control of my PC and tried everything he could come up with, uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting temps, resetting permissions, etc, etc., and 5 hours later still could not get it to install. He said to call back and get another tech today or Monday and see if they can figure it out. I am at work today so it will be Monday.

I could sure use some help and suggestions from someone.

    My system:
HP desktop with 500 gb HDD (over half free)
    Windows XP Home
IE 7, sp 3 all updates

I am the administrator with permissions.

If an HP tech can't solve it...we're all in trouble..But:

That reg location is where apps that start at boot up are located. Viruses and trojans also like to place themselves there. Maybe you anti virus software is being over protective:confused:

    Thanks Steve,
No fix yet. I called HP Tech again yesterday morning. Again he took remote control of my PC. He rechecked all users and permissions, deleted temp files, he did so much I dont know what all he did do. I just watched and followed his prompts. After another 3 hours, we disconnected and he said he would call back in a couple hours after doing research. He did call back and again we uninstalled, deleted. etc,etc.. Even set up a new administrator account with all permissions. Could not install with that account or the 2nd new account he set up. 2 hours later, I had to go to work, so wife took phone and followed his prompts for another 2 1/2 hours. No solutions yet. She called me and said he was going to forward all the information as to what they had tried over the past 10-12 hours to the Enginerring Dept. and would call us back when he found a fix. Said he had tried all he could come up with. As of this time, we have not heard back from them. I did install the software wireless onto my Toshiba Laptop. NO Problem with it installing or finding Home Network. We did have Firewall off and BitDefender antivirus shut down during all attempts to install. We did try installing wireless and via USB on desktop. Will post back when I know something more.

I agree with Steve - it looks like you have the right people looking at the problem. That is HP tech support.

One question I would ask: what wireless device do you have in you computer? That is, make and model of Wireless NIC. Is it part of the motherboard or have you a wireless card fitted or USB dongle.

    ReggieB,

    If this helps..

    Wireless LAN PCI 802.11 b/g adapter WN5301A, It is a Lite-on brand . I guess it's a wireless card fitted.

I took the desktop PC and the new Photosmart C7280 to a local computer repair center yesterday. They are going to do a complete format of the HD and other tune up as necessary and then try and get the software installed. I should have it back by Feb 16 or 17. Will post back when I get it back.
