Delays when opening Office 2003 documents

I'm experienceing strange behavious with Office 2003......

If I select the document I want to open, both double click or right click and open, the document takes ages to appear. Yet if I first open Word or Excel and open a recent document (the one it took ages to open) it opens in an instant.

I experience the same problem even after disabling all startup items including Security software (Norton) the documents open more quickly but relative to each other opening Word first then recent document is still much quicker.

I have also repaired, then unistalled and reinstalled Office 2003 but still have the same "lag".

Any ideas very welcome as I've come across this on two systems now, one over a Network and I assumed some network lag but today on a stand alone PC.

Tried the DDE thing but no luck I'm afraid - the DDE checkbox keep re-setting. However, I think you are in the right area - when I open documents an icon appears saying that it is a read only copy as the original is already open for editing.
