With a properly maintained system, my answer would be no. I have had to use them on other's computers (to save time) but have never liked them and they can be very dangerous with inexperienced hands.

I'm with Wildfire...I don't recommend them.

I agree with both wildfire and dobhar - not needed in general usage - can do more harm than good and you will not see any difference in performance after using There are odd exceptions - example to clear out references to an uninstalled program which may prevent a later version from loading.
