free registry cleaner

I need a reliable registry cleaner - is there a free one that anyone knows ? I have downloaded many to do scans but none of them will do the repairs without a fee which I cannot afford at this time.....
Thanks in advance.

IMHO steer clear of Registry Cleaners unless you have a very good reason to use one - e.g. to remove references to an uninstalled program which are preventing a reinstall.

If you choose to go down this route be sure to use a cleaner which makes a back up of any changes made. I would suggest RegSeeker which is compatible with Win 98, but not 95.

It would have been helpful to have posted your OS

I have to admit I'm a babe in the woods regarding technical aspects of computers, but that is why I am here trying to dispell some of my ignorance. I've been reading reviews of registry cleaners and it seems like one keeps being rated highest on multiple different reviews.
http://www.better-reviews.net/registrycleanerreviews/

Regcure is always rated the higest. We have a computer that is about 4 years old, my wife uses it mainly for video and photo editing and playing old school games. In theory since it has been in continuous use for 4+ years, in reading the hype, it would not hurt to run a registry cleaner through it, but in reading some of these threads on registry cleaners, I get the definate impression that even though there are good reviews out there for registry cleaners and they make them sound like a must have, there really is no benefit to it. Have things changed? A lot of the threads were from early 2007 talking about them causing more harm than good.

The general viewpoint on registry cleaners has not changed - most MVP's and other experienced users will echo my post above.

You know I read the reviews and went to the regCure site and was looking at the testimonials and moticed that they were fake and sent this message and received this response from their customer service. Just from this response, I would not use their product if they were paying me to use it. I want to save this as the worst example of customer service in the history of mankind:

That's comedy! Obviously I don't watch much TV.

Thanks it's all fixed up.

Best,
Jason

PS. I've got bad news - the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus aren't real.
