My friend has Norton Internet security suite. I can find a setting for turning live update on. I can't find a setting for scheduling automatic live update. I checked the task scheduler and only found a schedule for doing a scan.

If I need to manually add a task to the schedule what is the exe that I need to point to?

She has Windows XP Home edition.

    Which version of LiveUpdate?

The most recent ones do not need to be scheduled. They run within 5 minutes from computer startup and if an internet connection is present, they connect and check for updates. After that, if they found a connection or not, the default is every 240 minutes. The 240 minutes interval can be changed in the options (start LU manually to find the spot).

You can download the most recent file from LiveUpdate files.

    Hi Christer,

I didn't realize the newer versions don't need to be scheduled. (I don't use Norton anymore). I'll check the version she has. I have to unhook my computer to hook hers up to the internet, and then I'll check through live update. I downloaded the file you gave me a link to, just in case. Thanks.

    Hi Alicia!

LU updates itself too. I assume that it has been self updated to version 3.x which doesn't need scheduling.

I installed Norton Internet Security a few weeks ago and the LU version on the CD was promptly updated to a more recent version. Note that I say "a more recent version ", not necessarily the MOST recent version. It depends on the language of the Symantec Application. 3.2.0.68 is the most recent version in english but 3.0.0.171 is the latest version in swedish (I think because that's what I got). No matter what language version the Symantec Application is, the most recent version in english can be downloaded and installed.

(A lot of unnecessary information for you but maybe not for a "foreigner" reading this!)

Christer I can't find the option to change LU schedule. I get to the 'general settings' and there isn't an option there. Then I tried to run live update manually but the wireless connection got disconnected- now I know why I don't have a laptop. I did not see an option when trying to run LU manually. I must be blind! Also where do I check her version? Don't see an about anywhere.

Maybe I was unclear but you don't need to "run" a manual update session, just start the application to get to the options.

Have you verified that the version is 3. "something "? Options > About ...

In my 3.0.0.171 it looks like in the attached screenshot.

    Hi Christer,

'Configuration for live update' is not a screen I have been able to get to yet.
I did finally get a run live update and updated all the components of her Norton. I tried to install the LU newest version from the link you gave me, but it said she already has it. I tried to click run live update again to get to the window that has the 'options' but I got a message about one incidence of LU already running and try later. I had to unhook internet from her computer to get onto internet on mine. So, I haven't had a chance to try 'later'. I should wait past that 5 minutes after startup mark. Then it doesn't check for 240 minutes, right? Then I won't get the error message.

As far as I can tell, she has 2006 and the version I found somewhere, can't remember what component it was for (grey moment) 3.2.0.68

... or start LU immediately after booting, before it has a chance to auto-launch.

If I remember correctly, I have come across an installation which was corrupted and didn't show the "Automatic LiveUpdate" tab. I think that I uninstalled LU from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, rebooted and reinstalled the most recent version.

All this is assuming WinXP. If it is Win98/ME, there is a "last version" of LU that supports those operating systems.

    Hi Christer,

I finally got into the options for LU and changed the settings. Thanks. I would have never figured out where that option is!

One more question. :) I can see how to set up a custom scan for Norton internet security scan, but where is the setting for the one that runs automatically?

Which vintage? I'm still on 2005 and the only thing that runs automatically (default) is a NAV scan which is scheduled within NAV. You can create new schedules or have none at all (delete the default). I don't have a scheduled time because I don't want this old BOAC to be disturbed by any scan whatsoever when I'm using it. I start a scan manually when I know that it will be idling for some time.

She has 2006. I was working on her system, and a security scan just started on it's own. Actually now that I think about it, automatic is good for her. I will tell her not 'fix' anything but tracking cookies without checking with someone (who knows more than she does.)

Hi Alicia J, Christer, and readers,

This is Michael from the Norton Authorized Support Team. I saw that there was quite a lot going on in this thread, and thought I'd jump in here to provide some official instructions for enabling Automatic LiveUpdate.

To enable Automatic LiveUpdate in Norton products from 2007 and later:

    1. Start your Norton product.
    2. On the Norton AntiVirus tab or the Norton Internet Security tab, click Settings.
    3. Under Basic Security, click LiveUpdate.
    4. Click Turn On.

To enable Automatic LiveUpdate in Norton products from 2006 and earlier:

    1. Start your Norton product.
    2. Click Options. Click Norton AntiVirus if you see a menu.
    3. Click LiveUpdate.
    4. Check Turn automatic LiveUpdate on (recommended). This turns on Automatic LiveUpdate for all Norton programs.
    5. Click OK.

To see these instructions in the Norton Knowledge Base, click on this link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/0/426899af17b7cfd088256b2600715d96?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us

Also here's the official word regarding automatic virus scans: "Provides continuous, unobtrusive protection against viruses, malicious code, and Trojan horses, by automatically scanning files as they are downloaded, opened, created, or run. Removes virus, worms, and Trojan horse infections automatically, without interrupting your work." In other words, virus scanning is always happening in the background.

Here's a link to the Norton Knowledge Base article containing the above information for Norton Internet Security 2006: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...5705f0061d9da?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us

    Hopefully this information proves useful.

    Best wishes,
    Michael

    Hello Michael,
    welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

You tell us how to enable LiveUpdate on different versions. That triggers a question about the first run of LU after the installation of Norton Internet Security. I always install applications disconnected from the web which means that I disrupt the first autolaunch of LU. After that, I check different settings prior to connecting to the web. When I come to the LU settings, on some occasions, automatic LU is enabled but on other occasions, automatic LU is disabled and has to be enabled by the user (me). I believe that I follow the same procedure each time I install NIS and have no idea why LU isn't always enabled. Do you have an explanation or an idea about what I might be doing differently when LU does not get enabled?

When I do an installation and something weird happens, I take notes and I found my notes on this issue. I didn't recall the situation correctly. Prior to running LU, when checking the settings, automatic LU is enabled. After the first run of LU, when it has updated itself, automatic LU is no longer enabled but has to be re-enabled by the user. According to my notes, this scenario is "standard ".

    Hi Christer,

In your earlier posting you state that you disconnect from the Internet when installing applications. Were you disconnected from the Internet when you installed Norton Internet Security 2005? Please let me know.

    Thank You,
    Michael York

    Hi Michael!

Yes, I was disconnected from the internet. When I do a fresh installation from square one, I try to stay disconnected as far into the process as possible. Updates to Windows, Office and other applications downloaded in advance and installed from CD/DVD or HDD. After installing the security applications, I connect to the internet and get the updates. It's the same when uninstalling the expired version of a security application and installing the successor.

    Hi Christer,

I understand that you stay disconnected from the Internet when installing applications.

However, for Norton AntiVirus, Internet Security or Norton 360, I would reccomend that you stay connected to the Internet. This will enable our products to run all of the necessary updates prior to their actual launch and scan, including background scanning. The selection for "Turn On Automatic LiveUpdate" will stick if you are connected to the Internet during the installation.

    I hope this information helps.

    Thank You,

    Michael York
