Dvds crashing windows

Hi there,

I'm having an odd problem that I've not experienced with my laptop before, (on XP)

Whenever I try to play any dvd either in media player or intervideo win the blue screen of death flashes up and then my computer restarts itself.

I bought the laptop in the Uk then used it in Canada for a while then brought it back to the uk, on being back in the uk I put a uk region dvd in and it claimed that my computer was the wrong region then brought me a menu to change the region so i picked the uk and ever since my computer has restarted when trying to play any uk dvd...

any ideas would be gratefully recieved!

Hello jdnimmo,

Right click on My Computer > properties > Advanced tab

In the Startup and Recovery section > Settings bar > In the Systems Failure section: uncheck Automatically Restart.

On the next failure, take note of the error number and message.

The other check boxes also should be checked: dump file and name/location.

Regards - Charles

I did as you said but was unsure which error I was getting, there was something on the blue screen which was:

STOP: 0x00000050 (0xF11c3E20, 0x00000000, 0x804D9A69, 0x00000003)

And then windows created a log of it:

Error signature:

BC Code: 10000050 BCP1: F11C3E20 BCP2: 00000000 BCP4: 00000003 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 Product: 768_1

Thanks for the help!

Hello jdnimmo,

You may have a malicious process (rootkit) on your system:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894278

Follow the MS Doc's directions on determining whether your system is infected.

Also, do a HighjackThis scan:

Download and run HijackThis:

Download from here http://radiosplace.com/ latest version 1.99.1

Download it to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis

unzip (double click on zipped folder)

click on the execute

click on Do a system scan and save a logfile and save to the folder you just created

copy resultant .txt file and paste into your next post

I'll move the thread if need be to the Malware removal section after your next post.

Regards - Charles

Looked at the MS Doc thing, which some of the symptoms fit but the resolution doesn't fit at all but here is the HJT log anyway:

Hello jdnimmo,

I don't see anything malicious in your scan, but I'll get someone else look at it.

See if this is a codecs problem - download the All-In-One codescs pack here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...k_All_in_1.htm

If that doesn't solve the problem, then post a dump - how to here:
Dump Data collection tool and instructions

Regards - Charles

Hi Charles and JD

I don't see a likely reason for the blue screen reboots.

There is some cleanup that could be done but not related to this problem.

And no obvious sign of a RootKit. They are not always so obvious anyway but I don't think that is the culprit here.

This seems to be hardware related, usually the case in blue screens.

Let me confirm this!

Only when accessing a DVD?

No problem say playing a music cd or installing software etc?

Or burning a CD or DVD?

If this is true then try the below.

Boot to safe mode.

Clean temps.

In device manager rt click the DVD drive and select uninstall. Don't worry it will reinstall on reboot and if it don't, it is because it really does have an issue.

go to control panel admin tools event viewer

in the left panel rt click ea entry and Clear all events (save if you want)

close all windows

reboot to normal mode

immediately check the event logs, only incidents that have happened from the moment you cleared them will be there

rt click on Applications and select save as Apps1 and in the type choose the one thas has *.txt.

do the same for System name it Sys1

Don't post them yet!

Then close all back to desktop.

Try a DVD if it works ok now, we fixed it when we removed it and it reinstalled on reboot.

IF it still blue screens and reboots, go stright to the event viewer again do the same log file procedure except make these apps2 and sys2.

Copy pate all 4 logs back to us in order.

Mike

How to get to event log?

it is in the post above but here it is again:
Quote:
go to control panel admin tools event viewer

in the left panel rt click ea entry and Clear all events (save if you want)
No no log needed yet

just do the steps in the order above, you can answer my questions even before you do this

OK JD

Did you uninstall the DVD in device manager as I requested earlier above?

If not do that now and reboot let it reinstall and test it by dvd access.

If it still has error only then do the below.

Ok so now you know how to post the event logs.

We need to try to get as little other info in the logs as possible.

To do that:

Normal mode.

close all apps to desktop

clear all events (do nothing else except close event logs and exit)

access a dvd get blue screen

boot back up

immediatly (do nothing else) get me these logs

One of the last errors on this should be from the DVD error

OK JD

Never had to deal with changing DVD region codes myself.

A little research shows we may be barking up the wrong tree.

How many times have you changed the region code?

see the below

http://ask-leo.com/unable_to_update_...dvd_drive.html

http://www.videohelp.com/

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Region-Free

I think now it may be time to burn (update) new firmware to your drive.

To do that you need to go to the DVD mfg website, find your exact model, find the website, download the Software utility and a firmware binary. This is usually free.

The instructions and steps to do it should be there.

One of the things the burning utility will do is give you the existing firmware revision which you can compare to the newest that they offer. The revison will have info about updated and other issues it addresses.

This "may" default (reset) the issue of only so many changes as mentioned above.

Have changed the region codes a few times, but it is definitly on uk region now, as I tried to put an American dvd in to see if it would play and it said I would have to change the region and I still had 2 changes left (and I didn;t change it then)

You said to go to the DVD mfg website, as I'm using a laptop (toshiba sat pro a10, is that where I get the dvd firmware from or do I need to go elsewhere?

Thanks for your help in this!

Jd

Oh and I did reinstall the dvd drive twice but to no avail!

Are you saying it gave you this info on the American DVD without crashing?

Only crashes on British DVD's?

On the firmware you may can get it at the toshiba site but you should be able to confirm the make and model of the DVD drive itself there.

The firmware is specific to the drive and exact model, not to the computer.
