Odd sounds driving me nuts !

This a first for me.

Windows XP Pro
Microsoft Internet Explorer

Problem:

We log onto internet.
We get our home page.

Then as it complets loading I get this Loud "Whip..Whip"

Every time we click on a new item it sounds out when image is loaded.

We have checked all the "Internet Options" and see nothing about such annoying actions. This has just started.

Any suggestions - we'll try anything to stop that noise !

Thanks

My System

Hey jbarker

1) Have you tried turning off "Play Sounds in web pages" under Internet Explorer-->Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced Tab-->Multimedia Section?

2) Have you tried turning off the PC sounds for your PC to see if it goes away...if it does then try turning them back on one at a time to find the problem. Is this the only sound that is causing you grief?

- Control Panel -->Sounds and Audio Devies-->Sounds Tab

No sounds - still noisey !

All sound choices of the Internet Explorer have been unchecked.
All sounds in Control Panel say "none".

Still get that loud sound like a big blob of water dripping.\

Always when we log on.
Then ever now and then.

My internet provider has a popup blocker - we contacted them - they say it is not active.

And yes, it seems to sound off as if a popup is trying to get through.
However, how can one find the popup stopper if on has never installed one.
I haven't.

This subject I saw in another posting - no answers there either.

Got any more ideas - we'll do almost anything to stop this racket.

Here is what we are doing now - turning the volume off. That is not the best of solutions !

Also, I got all sounds turned off - yet the mouse click still beeps ! It is a low tone and unaffected by the volume control. We hear it even with the volume muted. I can do moorse code with the mouse button !

More on that sound

I'm back with more info about that odd sound.

We played every known sound Windows XP has, and none of them are the sound we hear.

So, for anyone who may be able to assist on this mystery - I have recorded the sound - it is a small wave file and we can include it embedded in an
e-mail.

Let me know if anyone wants to hear this thing, and we'll send it to you.

PS: That clicking noise at the left mouse click - that was the menu command sound. Even with volume off !

Sound gone - here is how

Made a list as best memory could recall of programs installed.
Started uninstalling them one at a time.
After eight uninstalls we located the offending sound producer.

It was one of those "SpyWare" programs that is supossed to help and was recommended as the best thing since......
.
This one was called "Pest Patrol"

Got rid of Pest Patrol and got rid of that pest !

OK, now for the disclaimer.

Perhaps it was not the program Pest Patrol causing the problem after all.
However, we no longer got that sound.
So, to be on the safe side, we will just say:
"We don't know what caused those sounds."

Pest Patrol - Cookie Patrol

Hey Guys,

Pest Patrol is indeed one of the culprits for the weird sounds you're hearing. To disable the water-drop SFX, right click on the Pest Patrol Control Terminal > Cookie Patrol > Disable Sound. Once you have disabled sound, close all your browsers and try it again. That should take care of it.

Also, the Morris Code SFX the gentleman alluded to earlier (navigating forward and back with IE) is the Windows Explorer - Start Navigation SFX. You can set it to none by going to the Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices Properties > Sounds > Scroll down to the Windows Explorer section. Click on the sounds drop-down menu and scroll up to select 'None'.

Hope that Helps!
