After having uninstalled ( ) McAfee Internet Security OFF my puter, I was without any protection for a couple of weeks, but became concerned about having no protection, and began reading your recommendations of protection. I downloaded SpyBot, AdAware, and Kerio firewall. I was trying to download AVG (I actually did 4 times, try that is) and they seem to think I was successful as they sent me an e-mail and serial #. Well, I can't find it, and my search helper can't find it, also my search history can't find it. There is no trace of it anywhere, not even on the download manager.
Is there something I'm not doing or can someone please tell me what to do? Maybe call the folks at AVG or something?

The name of AVG's downloaded/installation file is "avg6509fu free.exe" (with the space after "fu") although if the search term you're using is just "avg" it still should find it.
If you used a download manager to download it, somewhere in its preferences should be the name of, and path to the folder into which it downloads. If the file is not there then the assumption I would make is that it didn't actually get downloaded.
Grisoft, the makers of AVG, apparently don't care whether you actually download the file. They just send the serial number once you've filled out and submitted the form, which then takes you to the page where the link to the download is. At least, every time I've filled out the form, I've gotten a serial number sent.
I suggested using avg* because many people rename a file prior to downloading it ... many files have such cryptic names that, once downloaded, you can't tell what they are. And, if you're downloading to a folder that has a number of other files in it, you frequently can't find the darned thing once it's there.
XP's Search Helper found 47 files on my system, using avg*, but Agent Ransack found 92.
Thanks, folks! I'm going to take this file Miz gave me and see if that works, then I'll check out the avg* and the ransack thingie. If I don't find it, I'll try downloading it again.
BillyBob, I don't remember seeing a little window telling me where it was going, I'm gonna go see what I can find.
frazzled - I've often been guilty of not noticing where the things wanna download myself. If it turns out I really do need to know, I go back to the download site and start to get the file again and then look at where it wants to put the download. After that I abort the download.
Well, @#%$, I found the file using avg*. It says it's in Internet Explorer. Does that make any sense? I can't find the file using avg6509fu free.exe, though.
I'll go back to the download site and pay more attention. Good idea? Yep, I think so, too.
I myself never download anything to the C: drive. I have a special download folder on the H: drive that they get downloaded to first and then put in a Subfolder with a name which relates to the program.
For example AVG for AVG Kerio for Kerio. Regseek for RegSeeker. Nvidia for Video drivers.
Then I run the install from there. And if the file needs to be unzipped I unzip it right there.
It seems everything gets sent to C: I don't have an H drive, I don't think. How about a D: drive? Maybe I could make myself a folder in there and start using that. Boy, I think my inexperience is showing
I... I... sniff, sniff. I reckon I'll just go look some more.
This is very interesting: I went back to avg download and actually watched it being downloaded this time! Maybe they were having a bad night last night.
I had to exit setup, though, to close some windows and lost track of the setup, so I opened the WinZip and found all the tracking cookies that I have been deleting using SpyBot and AdAware. Now, what kinda deal is this? What should I do, I don't want to uninstall WinZip.

You do have the right idea.
I just used the H: drive as a reference as I do have one that I can use.
I was ( untill it quit working ) downloading things to a CD RW. But I dropped the CD onto the floor and then ran my chair over it. I guess that is a good reason for it not working anymore.
But any partition other than C: will work as it is great help in saving stuff and not having to download it again if the C: does get wiped out.
I just takes some thought, and some practice, Frazzled.
When I got my first PC in 1997, I had been ten years on the Amiga platform, so I was already used to working with a hierarchical directory structure, as well as a partitioned hard drive.
I think the simplest partitioning with Windows would be two partitions, with the OS and all installed programs on the C: partition, and all data files on a D: partition.
Personally, I use four partitions:
C: SYSTEM ..... the OS -- Docs & Settings folder/Windows folder
D: TOOLS ...... the Program Files folder is assigned here, using TweakUI
E: STORAGE ... data files -- documents, images, etc.
F: ZEEFILES ... download folder and zipped program archives
I do something like BillyBob does ... all downloads go to F:\Downloads (unless I want a particular download to go directly to a specific folder). I also have three temporary work folders on the F: partition (Purgatory, Quarantine, and Temporary) where downloads and archived programs are unzipped and installed from.
"snicker" poor CD. reminds me of the time I dropped a pack of ciggs unbeknownest to me and ran over them with my tractor trailer. I didn't miss them until I got to where I was picking up my load, "well, where the heck is my ciggs?' Went back to the store and there they were smashed in the parking lot. The man in the store actually exchanged them for me.
Guess I better go get a couple z's. I've got to get up at 4:00 am to go to my real job, ph-t-t-t. Talk to y'all tomorrow night, maybe I can find where I left that avg.
Hi
Have you ever thought about asking the computer to find the file called Grisoft rather than AVG.
On my computer all programs wether downloaded or from cd go straight in to C:windows/program files/gisoft
Just a thought
