Problem with Partition Magic (actually Boot Magic)

First of all, thanks to all who responded to my posting regarding the applicability of Partition Magic. OK, I purchased it, but I have a problem with Boot Magic. I get an error (#8164): "he configuration of Disk Manager on this drive prevents boot magic installation". I found some things regarding that at PowerQuest's website, but it wasn't much help. For one thing I don't think I have "Disk Manager" (by OnTrack). I did some research at OnTrack's website, and they seem to indicate that PowerQuest's info is incorrect (PowerQuest suggests contacting OnTrack and seek their help regarding fixing something in sector 2 of the hard drive, but OnTrack says that their Disk Manager does not use sector 2). So, quite puzzling.

Has anyone had this problem, and solved it?

Perhaps they are referring to XP's Disk manager. Right-click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management.

If I remember correctly, this program needs to be installed on a FAT or FAT32 partition. You may not have one.

OK, I found out what the problem was. Turns out that the MAXBLAST3 (which Maxtor strongly suggests you use to format your new Maxtor drive), does something to sector 2 of the disk. However, I did not really need to run it ( I remember noticing that my PC's BIOS recognized the drive as a 30GB drive, which it is, right after running the hard drive auto-detect).

I actually, got a reply back from PowerQuest. They said I should do: FDISK /MBR from the Startup floppy which is supposed to reset some signature DDO (or something like that).

Anyway, so I did:

C:> A:FDISK /MBR

You just get your prompt (no other indication that anything happpened), and I guess it's not documented because FDISK /? won't reveal anything about "/MBR", but it seems to have worked.
