88 bit Kernel

My geek sister has now gone to Peru for 5 months.
Sent me a CD from NY with an Install for an 88 bit Kernel.
What is Kernel and why//how should system performance be
improved after installing an 88 bit Kernel ?
I do not know ...
regards

I can't explain exactly what the kernel is, but I have a program called Hare (http://www.dachshundsoftware.com) that is supposed to make machines faster by using an 88-bit kernel and some other tweaks and settings. I've had it on both of my Win 98 machines for a couple of years. Don't know how much improvement I get from it since I've done a lot of other tweaking, but it hasn't caused any problems and only costs about $20.

merlin--Here is what www.google.com offers

The user comments at Softpile (only three, unfortunately) are rather tepid

My opinion is tepid, too. I noticed absolutely no change or improvement running Hare in any configuration, and it adds overhead.

Thanks guys. That's the name of it - "Hare".
I put it in the start up and it puts a bone icon in the tray.
(Had a laugh - "Hare and Bone" seems like a skinny dog)
In the help it says "speed up of common system commands"
Well, I do notice some response improvements or maybe
my imagination or something else I did.
It's caused no bother so far, so I'll keep/watch it for a while.
I'll report again after a few weeks ...
regards

Yeah, the graphics in Hare are pretty lame. As I said, I've had it a couple of years and have had no troubles with it. As for measurable improvement, well who knows??
