media player codecs

why is it when i try to play a divx file or any video in media player, more often than not when im online i connect to codec server, but always get "error downloading codec"
should i give up on media player

There are an awful lot of codecs out there. Some that work fine haven't made it to the mainstream.

The easiest solution for most codec problems is to install ffdshow. It should solve most if not all of the codec problems:

If you really want to get the full-service package, you should uninstall any codec packs that you may have added (like Nimo or DivX, Angel Potion, or any others) and try one of these all-in-one things (full or basic---the full includes a player and an appliance that tells you what codec a particular movie needs):

done and dusted just previewed gone in 60 seconds through media player.

P.S. now back to my card (joke) cant figure it out, and i sure dont want to splash out on a new monitor just yet, i like this one 19" and works fine on the other card???

Glad we got this one.

It seems MS prefers you use their codecs so they don't supply any old one you may need. But there are really things in the world that work even if untested by MS.
