Gotta say thanks.

Due to the recomendations of and encoragement by fellow members of the BBS I have made some changes to my system.

No. Not XP yet. That will come later. But I do see that as a near future adventure.

I have however changed from my long use of and firm support for Symantec software. Not that I had actual problems, but on the idea that something different might give me better overall preformance with less system load and still provided the PROTECTION that I would like.

This appears at this time to have been accomplished by AVG and Kerio. And unless someone thinks that I am wrong the said software may also be used in XP. Only some one that has used them can answer that for me.

Startup resources have gone for 83,83,96 to 89,89,98. I would call that a very nice improvement. And I could more than like improve it more if I did not need the Mouse Software loaded.

Overall system speed seems much improved. And smoother also.

mflynn

I beleive it was you that mentioned Norton getting into the system. I was aware of that but I did not realize just how much until I had to manually remove it last night. For some reason the system did not know it was even installed.

I wonder who messed that up ?

I thought the 2001 & 2002 versions were bad. They are nothing compared to 2003.

I could post screenshots if you like, but be assured, that Kerio, AVG, and all the software that I've raved about DOES work on XP as well as 98.
Of 5 full time boxes (and countless part time ones) in this house, 4 run XP. The 5th is just not powerfull enough (P166mmx), but does spendidly with 98 FE.
Of the four, 3 are multi-boot, with an assortment of 95, 98, 'nix, and BeOS, for various reasons.
I won't twist your arm about getting into XP, although I believe you have the right approach. Get a second drive, set up a dual boot, and dive in.
Once you have grown accustomed to the NT based OS's, the jump (baby step?) to DotNET/server, Multimedia Edition, or Longhorn, will be a smooth, painless transition.
Have no fear, networking will become simpler with time, as more households get into the "networked family" idea.
Remember the first time you tried to install a winmodem?
Think of how much easier it is to actually share files between two computers today, versus getting the com port settings and IRQ for that POS.

Have a great day!

What is the old saying ?

Every journey begins with the first step.

But before taking that first step it helps to have a little knowledge of what may be encountered along the way.

That is why I am testing new software on a system that I am familiar with. It should make things a little easier later,

Two of us may run into the same BASIC problem. But due to the equipment on hand it may have to be handled a little differently.

Please do not get me started on WinModems and/or Windows ME. I will admit that my opinion of either one is not of the best.

The Internal Modems were replaced by a ( no problems ever ) External regardless of the OS. In fact for the short time I had XP my ANCIENT USR 56K external worked like a charm. And all I did was plug it in.

ME was replaced ( now get this ) by Win95 OSR2 and upgraded in steps from there.

Glad all worked out for the better with your system BB.
I too have been a long avid NAV user.

I stilll use NAV on my dual boot win98 & win2k box. (I hardly ever use 98 anymore though because 2k is so much smoother and faster.) But, I have all NAV processes & services disabled and only ever do manual scans. Wife and kid's boxes are on auto.

FYI re NAV 2003:

I use NAV 2002 on win2k because I had an issue with 2003 on win2k. NAV 2003 has a 'new service' previously not in earlier versions, some type of security password script service and when installed on 2k, it took 3 MINUTES to get the access page to my router. This I have tested and researched and there was no workaround. Disabling the service did nothing too, so I reformatted and loaded NAV 2002.

Now maybe you can get back to golf instead of virus'....

May I jump in here?. I use Nortons and while realizing it is a big resource hog, I still like some of the things it does. Does Kerio/AVG do pretty much the same and what is NAV?

Yes to Kerio/Avg And with one heck of a lot LESS system load.

NAV = Norton Anti Virus.

Has anyone used RNIS ?

Thanks for all the comments. I bought Norton Internet Security 2003, installed it on Windows ME, and the system just didn't seem to work right. I finally removed it, but there still seem to be fragments around.

Has anyone used the program RNIS, which can be downloaded from Norton and stands for Remove Norton Internet Security? And if you have used it, does it work ??

Thanks for any response.
