My youngest daughter called me from college this afternoon to report an annoying popup on her computer. This popup titled "My Dell Downloads" keeps coming up on her laptop. It says, "Some of the factory installed software is also available at My Dell Downloads. You can download copies to re-install most of the factory installed software on your computer." It gives the options to visit My Dell Downloads site now, remind me later, and do not remind me. Then it says something about Dell Datasafe Local Backup. No matter what option she clicks, the box reappears about a minute or so later. She says it takes up half of her screen which makes it tough to do stuff like homework!

She has a Dell laptop and is running Windows 7.

Any advice I can pass on to her will be much appreciated.

This is not Malware, but a legit Dell app.

The Other Software forum is the most appropriate location - moved.

She can disable both applications to keep them from loading. Once that's done, with a reboot to make sure they're not running, she can either uninstall them from Control Panel>Programs and Features or leave them installed in case she wants to use one or the other later.

To disable them, press the Windows key/R key combination to open the Run window.

In the Run window, type "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK.

In the System Configurations window that opens, go to the Startup tab.

On the startup tab, uncheck DataSafe Online and Dell Support Center Updates. Click OK.

It will ask if you want to reboot. Click Yes.

When it has booted back up, there will be a window telling you the system is using selective startup. Yes, you want it to use selective startup so click the little box in that window for "Don't show me this message again" and click OK.

    The annoying alerts should stop.

We followed the instructions from Miz but it didn't work. After the reboot, the unwanted Dell stuff popped up again. She also never got the window telling her that the system was using selective startup.

Go back into msconfig and make sure things stayed unchecked.

To close System Configuration, be sure to click OK and not the X.

Did you try clicking Apply and then OK?
