I've searched the internet--but it seems I'm the only one on the planet who's having this particular problem. If anyone here can help me out with it, it would be greatly appreciated.

In any case, yesterday, after restarting the computer after having used it for a while, the capacity for the computer to read HTTP sites seems to have gone bad--while tests showed that it wasn't that the computer wasn't connected to the internet (Other, non browser based subjects worked fine), but it was unable to read.

Eventually, I reset IE to it's browser defaults, and restored from the system settings from a few days ago, internet now works, but it seems incapable of detecting Java now--even after going to Add/Remove programs, uninstalling every instance of Java on the computer, and manually downloading it again. I might also note that my computer is now unable to even do an online installation of it either--and the error report I get doesn't actually tell me what went wrong (Save from reporting that 'Your internet connections do not allow this! When I'm hooked up to an 'Always On' broadband connection, and trying to 'Set this up', gets me a report saying as much). I've checked to make sure it wasn't my internet options, and I've checked to make sure it wasn't that I didn't have the Virtual Machine, but despite my best efforts, I just can't get Java to function anymore--and it's frustrating, as I'm involved with at least one digichat group, and I don't have access until this problem is resolved.

Feel free to ask me to go through it step by step (Though please be sure to note what each step entails, in case I've been missing something) but most of the obvious approaches have gotten me nothing.

In case it matters, here's a report I got last time I tried an "Online Installation "

    Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10

I'm not entirely sure what that was supposed to accomplish, but it hasn't worked.

Please note, rebooting and loading the system into Safe Mode improves matters to the point where the Java website can confirm that 'You have Java installed to the latest version!" (Normally, I don't even get that far), but it's still unable to actually run any applets in that state.

I'm still at a loss for words, and my requests for help seem to be falling onto awkward silences and requests to repeat the same actions that I have explicitly attempted (As noted in my prior post). And Java's own forum seems to be more for developers rather then people who are having problems with the software.

Is there anyone here who can help? The situation's getting a little maddening at this point, and I'd like to at least know who else I can talk to if there aren't any gurus around here.

I opened it up, and selected "English" as my language (Obviously) and was brought up with a list of options, Search for Updates, Remove Older Versions, Additional Tasks (Which brought up a further menu) and About

First I clicked 'Remove Older Versions', nothing came up, then Updates--using 'jucheck.exe' wound up failing (As the problem comes up with the same "Java cannot check with your current Internet Options, please change them to allow it), and updating from the site hasn't helped either.

The 'Other Options' I ran all of them as well, and to no effect.

What 'Was' I supposed to do with it?

What do you have listed for Java installations when you navigate to Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel and do you have Java listed as a seperate entry in the Control panel?

Nothing is listed except the installation I need, and it does appear in my control panel.

    Where is that listed?

edit: I'd like to assume its listed under Add or Remove Programs but I'd like confirmation.

    Under Add-Remove Programs

The problem isn't that 'Java Doesn't Work' I don't think, I can open the console, and occasionally, I can even update it and have the primary Java website detect that it's present, the problem is that Internet Explorer abjectly refuses to detect it when I actually go to try running an applet. And no other browser can actaully detect the internet for some reason.

And it's getting frustrating, reinstalling Internet Explorer hasn't helped, and there are no obvious settings that say I can't use it--it's set to "Enabled" on the plugin list, the internet settings allow Java to be used... But when it's time to run an applet with it, I keep getting the message "(Such and Such) requries a Java Capatible web Browser to run "

Is there any step-by-step routine I can try to figure out what's going on precisely?

One of the first things we want to rule out is any third party software that may be blocking this. Are you running any kind of Firewall or anything like TeaTimer or any other active scanners (especially as they relate to Internet activity)? If so, disable them. Leave your AV Scanner active but let us know if its Norton or McAfee.

Have you dumped your temp files, temp Internet files and cached Java files lately? Try something like CleanUp! or ATF Cleaner.

I would reset IE to its default settings and then try it again. If still no go, you would be smart to head over Malware and Virus Removal, following the instructions at the very top post on the first page. Lets make sure your system isn't "hooked" before we start ripping out anything.

    ;)

edit: I was going to recommend removing any versions found and then downloading and installing the full offline version of runtime but based on your last post, I headed a different direction which is also suspect.

2nd edit: I'm also going to assume that youve checked "Manage add-ons" in your Browser to make sure you haven't disabled Java or that you haven't enabled anything that would be able to block it.

I am working on a 'Fresh Install' that's been reset to factory settings--that's what initially borked Java.

I used to have Teatimer, but I suspected that it was blocking something, and have since removed it to the best of my ability--it may still be present somewhere, but I doubt it at this point.

I'm using Symantec Internet Security right now--but if that's the problem, it's not very apparent, as shutting it down completely does 'Not' address the problem.

I suspect malware may have something to do with it--these problems cropped up after I noticed a keylogger stuck to my WoW account and tried to remove it ((Apparently failing, as my account got hacked the day after :( )), and my antivirus has been refusing to notice anything either--I get occasional blips on the radar, but those tend to close quickly before I get a chance to see what's going on, and I can't get access to the threat history either.

I'll try moving a post in there though to get help--but if you can suggest something else, that would be helpful

Note, your assumptions are correct, IE says that it allows java, but doesn't follow through when I try to load an applet.

I saw your post and logs over in the Malware forum and think its a good idea to have a Malware expert review them. Be patient, someone will get to you as soon as possible. I know Dave was going out of town for a couple of days and I would expect others to be tied up with Thanksgiving activities but sit tight, they'll get to you.

TeaTimer can be disabled from advanced settings in SpyBot S&D with a simple toggle. I'll hold other comments until your logs have been analyzed but did notice one McAfee entry in there along with your Symantec entries.

    Patience.

    ;)

Java 6 update 11 same symptoms

    Hi,
I upgraded from Java 6 update 6 to Java 6 update 11 today. I have the exact same problem. Initialy I could not get Java console to appear in any of my browsers but later I get stuck with class not found error.
I've uninstalled previous java. deleted all java files. cleared browser cache and add ons from Sun microsystems. Rebboted and reinstalled Java 6 Update 11 as Administrator but still no luck.
Does anyone know how to make java work?

I have Vista 32 bit SP1 with all updates until last month and IE7
Also tried it on Firefox 3.0.5 but no luck

Look forward to hearing from you guys.

    Cheers
