    Hello
I am having a problem at work. I have XP Pro, With office 2000. In Excel, If I use a bold or italic text and then click save the file closes and goes back to the folder the file is located in I does not save. It also creates a 37kb file in the folder that I cant not read. This started today. Any ideas why?
    Thanks
    Earl

Hi, a friend of mine was experiencing the same problem a while back so i'l ask him for a solution. Meanwhile, what format is the file that you are unable to open?

    Hi Lukee
I was able to find the source of the problem. Yesterday we installed a new HP laserjet network printer. This is what is causing the problem. If the new printer is set to the default on the PC we can not save Excel files that have been edited using bold or italic fonts. I found this out after doing a system restore and was able to save the file but after reinstalling the printer the problem reoccurred. If we set a different printer as the default we can save the file with no problems. I even reinstalled the printer with the minimum drivers and software option but the problem still occurred. I have no clue why the new printer drivers would cause this problem in Excel. if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

There are certain aspects of Office 2000 which are slowly but surely being depracated.

If you purchased a new HP Printer, (which may provide drivers for Windows XP), it is surely more intended to run or to be compatible with Windows Vista.

Windows Vista does not like Office 2000 at all. You can force it to install Office 2000, but only after it gives you a warning indicating certain feature incompatibilities.

I suspect your problem lies somewhere in that area.
I can see it being related to the font selection (possibly) as there are certain Office 2000 fonts which are no longer supported in later versions.

If the printer did not offer specific Windows XP drivers/utilities, you might visit the HP site to see if any are available.

In general, you are really reaching a point where you'll probably want to consider getting a more current version of Office (2003 or 2007). An additonal example is Outlook 2000 which I happen to know has recently been dropped from MSN support range (certain Outlook Connector features no longer work).
