To your knowledge is there any freeware program which allows conversion from Word 2000 format to .pdf format?

    Kind regards,
    Pat

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

Note that these pretend to be a printer so you choose "print" and select the PDF creator as a printer and it creates a pdf.
Some include the "print to pdf" option directly in the context menu, but most require you to select print and change from your default printer.

Thankyou all for the advice and to drecollect for the kind offer which I won't take up since once finished it would be a long document. Tony, I do have Start>Open Office Document but I don't see the "Export as .pdf" in the 'File Menu'. Is it that simple or are intermediate commands needed?

    Kind regards,
    Pat

Open the document in open office, then see the File menu.

You don't have Open Office, you have Microsoft Office!
The "Open Office" document that you are referring to is a shortcut to MS Office.
OpenOffice is a completely different office suite, it's open source and 100% free.
    www.openoffice.org

I even read an article once how certain sections of Microsoft in Redmond use OpenOffice to open Word docs and Excel spreadsheets that become corrupted by MSOffice! OpenOffice can be used to salvage files sometimes.

    Tony,
I spent quite some time wondering whether we (or more to the point) I was mistaken that I had 'Open Office' so I came back with the prepared script below:
    -----------------------------------------------------------
I do not have half the File commands you have and I feel we may be talking at cross purposes for reasons which are beyond me. Directly above the Start and Program column I have 'New Office Document' which when clicked gives me a list box of My Documents titled 'Open Office Document'. Opening any one in the list appears no different to opening them in Explorer's My Documents and the File Menu has no mention of Export or Export to .pdf. However I note your Document file is headed 'Open Office.org'. Could it be that you have at some time in the past downloaded a "Convert Word to .pdf" program which has now become an integral part of your 'Word' program or as might be more likely I have failed to add a suitable file converter. However I have trawled through Word's Help Files and can find no mention of a Word converter to .pdf format!
    -----------------------------------------------------------
Your last post now puts it all into perspective. Thankyou for that and the link to what I need. Once again,

    Kind regards,
    Pat

    Tony,
Reference The "Open Office" document I see it is 62MB and a friend who has broadband says he will download it for me. However before putting him to that trouble I am trying to understand its intentions from the information on the website. Is it a self contained Windows-like Word program in its own right or is it an add-on for Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office? If the former did it automatically integrate itself into your Word program (for example adding its commands to your File menu) or using your expertise did you integrate it? I mention that because if it integrates itself I assume:

    1. If you ever have a problem you would have to be aware as to which help file to refer to ie. Word or Open Office Help file?
    2. If you ever decided to delete it, it would know how to separate itself from Microsoft Word?

    Kind regards,
    Pat

OpenOffice is a complete office suite of programs much like Microsoft Office.

What components are included in OpenOffice.org?
OpenOffice.org components include word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, data charting, formula editing, a database, and file conversion facilities (including those for Microsoft Office formats). See our Features page for more information.

    Tony,
I now have the OpenOffice.org program but when installing and it gets to 'Java setup' it says "No Java Environment (JRE) found" even though I browse and point it to C:\Windows\Java which I have already. Meanwhile although the SETUP_GUIDE page 29 says it gives the option to install the JRE (i.e. a later version than 1.4.1.01) the "Install new JRE" option is blanked out and I cannot cannot find a way to unblank it.

The only other option I have is to install OpenOffice.org program without the Java facility. In your opinion would this be detrimental to the usefulness of the OpenOffice.org program? The sum of my knowledge on the subject of Java is:

    (1) It consists of small programs or
    (2) Is an island in the Indian Ocean

    Kind regards,
    Pat
