I have been trying to figure out how to capture six songs that I have on a cassette tape to wav files and then to a CD. I was able to do this several years ago on my old W98SE system using an old Adaptec program. I still have the old Adaptec CD but when I tried to install it I got a message about incompatiblilty with XP. I found one thread on this Board from 2003 but it didn't really answer my question. It did suggest a download called Audacity which I downloaded and installed but it appears to be beyond my comprehension to figure out how use it for my purpose.

I have searched through my Dell 8400 XP-SP2 system - Sonic Record Now, Music Match Juke Box, Creative Media Source & Sound Blaster but can't quite figure out how to do it - if it can be done - with any of those programs. They seem to deal only in music that is already on CDs. I got close on Music Match but a message said I needed their $39.95 upgrade to record in a "line in" mode. Since I only have six songs to record I hate to spend the time, effort, and money for something that probably won't be used again. Perhaps I am missing something that is already in my system that will let me capture these songs. Any suggestions or solutions?

I just use the freeware Audio Grabber and record it. I record to mp3. Be sure to get the LAME codec.
