i downloaded the newest version of windows media player from the microsoft website-version 10. when i install it, it says everything is ok but then when i go to open the program, i'm taken back to the install screen and the whole process starts again. when it's done installing again, instead of opening the player window, it opens the installatino window...again. no matter what, i can't get the actual player to open. any ideas?

    cheers,
    ogre

If you have an XP install CD (as opposed to a 'recovery CD that some PC makers gave you instead of the real thing) then click on the start button, on run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and click OK. See if the system file checker can find and replace any missing or damaged system files. That can easily cause this type of problem.

Maybe. Do you have an I386 folder on either your hard drive or the CD? Sometimes the outfits that give you those 'recovery CD' abominations at least put a copy of the system files in a folder by that name. It won't have any hotfix files but it's lots better than nothing.

If you do, try the sfc command and if it demands a CD, post back since there is a simple registry tweak that will tell SFC exactly where to look.

i have the folder and the scan runs fine. but when it's all done, it just closes and doesn't tell me anything. shouldn't at least tell me everything is ok?

There will be an event log entry that has full details of what was done.

    start => run => eventvwr.msc and OK
    or
Right-click My Computer, left-click Manage, left-click on Event Viewer
    or
Control Panel => admistrative tools => event viewer
    or
Help & Support Center, search for event viewer
    or

As usual, XP offers lots of ways to get to the same thing and it's a matter of user preference as to the way you prefer.

The event will be informational (as opposed to an error or warning) with a source of Windows File Protection
