I have an application (Chessbase 8.0) which I have launched from my desktop a million times.
Suddenly, I am getting an error message from Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library telling me that the application has requested an unusual termination.
I have tried reinstalling - no success.
I have tried installing on another PC with success, so I know there is nothing wrong with the exe file or the installation.
I will be grateful for any help you can provide.

It's possible something loaded or running in the background or possibly something that you may have opened and ran previously does not play well with this app. Use msconfig's diagnostic startup to disable "startup items" and see if the problem is cleared up.

Have you tried the support site for this product?:
    http://www.chessbase.com/support/index.asp

Googled this site for a personlized search of the site:
    http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&lr=lang_en&q=site:www.chessbase.com+"error"
You may want to fiddle with keyword filter to see what you can come up with.

On a drive by, I noticed an upgrade: Caution!! Upgrades are not the first recomended method to use in an effort to fix or repair a problematic program. It often componds the problem. Just thought I'd tack this up here as last resort. Perhaps there are patches or references to known bugs somewhere on this site. I will look as time permits but you may also wish to surf around this site to see if anything sounds like a possible winner.

Runtime errors can indicate virus or adware/malware infestation. How secure and sure are you that this may not be a possibility?

    Visual C++ runtime error

    Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have contacted the vendor, but they are rather slow in responding. The support website did not provide much info for this particular problem.
I have also checked for virus and adware with negative result.
All of my other desktop applications (including another chess program from the same vendor) run OK.
I will try disabling the start up apps from msconfig diagnostic start up.

When you uninstalled this did you also look in, I'll assume, "programs files" folder or the c drive for any folder left over from the uninstall. Sometimes when something is uninstalled it will still leave behind the darn folder with drivers or files in it. This may not get over written when you reinstall the program. If the problem happens to come from one of these leftovers, the problem will continue regardless of the reinstall.

It may help to do the uninstall reboot reinstalls from safemode bootup.
You can empty your temps in between the uninstall/reboot and reinstall. These may also have leftovers in them.

That's not a very easy support site to sift through is it? Perhaps if I was more familiar with these games and their layouts the site would make more sense to me. You'd think at the prices of this chess software (which, by the way, looked extremely interesting and fun, if your into professional chess) the support would be better handled or at least a little more user friendly.
--This is my version of the "small print" disclaimer/appendage--
Giving the site admin./vendor/?writer-of-software? discretion, my first impression of the site may be drawn from my unfamiliarity with the software and it's the combination of the two that I'm lacking. In other words "you can't judge a box by it's cover ".
    :) :)

I'm getting a little nervous for you. I don't understand to much about these programs but if you have been using them for years and have been saving a large quantity of games or data bases of such, I understand, you risk losing all of this if backups aren't done. You do have anything, pertaining to this software, you don't care risk losing permanently, safely backed up, don't you?

(^Sheesh..is that many comma's in one sentence grammatically correct? I feel like the English "personal pet peeved" board members are beating me with the "stupid stick "! )

Lots of commas can be fine and I can remember using more than that (I love the things) but ... errr ... that above paragraph ain't quite right.

However, we won't sic the English Police on you just yet. :D

    How about

You do have anything pertaining to this software that you don't care risk losing permanently safely backed up, don't you?

    or maybe even

You do have backups of anything related to this software that you don't care to risk losing permanently, don't you?

    or even

Back up any files related to this software that you don't want to risk losing.

Yes I did all of the above to check no files were left over from the application prior to re-installing. (note lack of commas).
I don't have to worry about my chess database (containing over 4,000 of my games), it's in a separate folder, and it's all backed up anyway. (note commas). So, where do we go from here?

Thank goodness for that. Although, I know I've seen these guy's staking out my house. I've got to be on a hit list somewhere.

I tend to write, edit, switch, "add to" and "erase from" these things so much that, after a while, I either lose perspective, train of thought or compulsive persnicketiness. Soon or later, things that are right don't look right and vis-versa. I eventually wind up throwing my hands in the air and hope the content rather than the context will get my point across. <<That and a very pretty, red sequined flack jacket. :)

All is well. The software application folks sent me an upgrade file, which when executed solved the problem. Case closed.

    Hi again Asteventon,
Oh thank goodness! I was hoping the software support guys would come through for you. I can't tell you how many public boards and sublinks I crawled over under and through looking for your problem that had a follow up with the fix. Nothing ever seemed to be publicly published or followed up on. No return feedback was given after the advice to directly contact software support. At least this one let's anyone interested know that the problem can be resolved by an "Chessbase Application" fix as opposed to an "Operating system" fix.

If your able, do you think you can finish this post with a little more of the specifics on what the root of the problem was? What did that "update file" update? If not, at least anyone seeking a similar fix can be assured that there is relief to had and how they can get it.

Thank you the update. I'm pleased to see it had a happy ending.
