Paint Shop Pro VERY slow to start

    Recently I noticed that whenever I open a picture file (eg jpeg file) by simply double clicking on the filename it takes anything up to 10 seconds for Paint Shop Pro (version 6.02) to open and the picture to be displayed (Paint Shop Pro is my 'default' picture viewer).
    If I run Paint Shop Pro manually (by selecting it from Programs within the Start menu) it starts almost instantly and then when I manually 'open' a picture file within Paint Shop Pro the picture is displayed almost instantly.
    So why does Paint Shop Pro take so long to start up and display a picture when I simply double click on the filename? It used to be a lot faster until recently.

    1. Try clearing out your Temp directories:
    User/Documents & Settings/Local Settings/Temp
    Drive/Windows/Temp

    2. Better to use the default XP image viewer because PSP is a very large program to load just for viewing images. I never use my image editors just for viewing, I use them only for editing images.

    Like TonyT, I use a lighter weight image viewer. Irfanview
    However, that doesn't answer your original question- why is the program taking so long to respond?

    Do you notice a delay with any other programs? Is your AV scanning the stored image before you open it? (If it has been scanned as it entered the system, it probably doesn't need scanned everytime you open it.) Is any other program running that might be causing a conflict?

    What OS do you use?

    As asked, what OS are you using?
    In win98, PSP is a poor "image viewer ". When running PSP in win98, you will see system slowdown after closing PSP because it will leak memory on win98 systems.

    NT, win2000 & XP handle memory differently than win98 and PSP will run faster with no memory leaks, but it's still too much for just viewing images.

    When I had win98, I just used IE as the default jpg & gif image viewer.

    It is not unusual for PSP to open slowly. You can speed it up a bit after it oipen, for the nexr time, by going to File/Preferences/Miscellaneous/ and uncheck "Show Splash Screen ".

    BTW, why do you use it as your Default Viewer? Why not IE or Irfanview? They are both faster to open.
