    Hi all

reading around I discover that people are running much more recent versions of Winamp than the v2.75 which I'm stuck with - for my antique P1 has no MMX support, and any Winamp after 2.75 requires MMX to make the AVS (lightshow) work

I'm wondering how well the AVS presets I've made work on the later versions - a few friends are running Winamp 3 and they report no problems (although I cannot use the presets they have made)

If anyone's brave enough to try :p with a later Winamp version, I'd really appreciate a bit of feedback as to how they function on later versions...

here's one and what it should look like - and here's another...

they don't need sound playing but it will modulate the second one a bit.

(for the presets, right-click and save to whatever plugins folder your other *.avs are in)( "what it should look like" is just a jpg)

    best wishes, HJ

I've got Winamp 5.0. They seem to work just fine. ;)

    Thanks Zander - nice one!

that's good to know - I thought they would probably keep it compatible in the later versions, nice to have confirmation though.

one of these days I must make some time and give it a real go - knocks the living daylights out of my old P1 (not hard) but it's multo rewarding - and surprisingly easy to end up with things that look OK.

anybody got a spare eidophor? ;)

    best wishes, HJ.

I admit to having next to zero knowledge about Winamp. But I just downloaded and installed v5.01. It seems to have no clue what a .avs file is. Am I missing a plug-in or something?

When you open Winamp, click view>visualizations. The window that opens shows (or plays) the avs files. In windows explorer they are located in \Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\avs\Winamp 5 Picks. That's about all I can tell you about them. I usually use MMJB so I'm not real familiar with winamp.

    Hi Newt

AVS is a plugin, yes - my Winamp v2.75 came with two "visualisation" plugins, vis_avs.dll and vis_nsfs.dll which I found in Program Files\Winamp\Plugins underneath which in Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\avs came a whole load of ready made presets *.avs

(NB I found that vis_nsfs.dll tended to crash sometimes; but vis_avs seems stable)

The fun thing about AVS is that it has an editor so you can play with it...

Try looking in Preferences down to Plugins>Visualisation: there's a link "get plugins" on mine...

or, if you find you have AVS listed on that screen it might need to be selected to enable it (first time after install...)

if you have it selected, the quick start is CtrlShiftK; then double-click in the AVS window to get to the editor; then set up for fullscreen using the editor menus (absolutely no idea how much of this is the same in later versions!)

    best wishes, HJ.
    AVS editor screen:
set fullscreen mode before using fullscreen! render superscope does many things
    (both ~120k jpg)

Nice one Zander - I hadn't the foggiest what the new folder structure would be like... :)

"fast software bpp conversion" has a slight bug in mine for 24bit modes - sends them off to the side a bit (but this might be because I have to kludge for no MMX support)

try adding in a render:superscope and look for the "Load Preset" button - one of the options is a spiral. Gives good hints to both polar and rectangular for drawing.
The sqrt(h^2+w^2) is a dead neat way of getting as many points as you need to do a diagonal. But usually you can get away with far fewer and it refreshes faster.

    Warning - this thing's addictive ;)

good luck and best wishes, HJ.
