I had to replace my modem and it makes that crazy internet noise when connecting. I turned the old one off too long ago to remember how to do it. Can anyone help me?

Why not just turn down the volume control on your speakers.

I think this was how I done it when I was on Dial-up.

Go into Phone and Modem Options in the Control Panel.

When you are on the Modems tab click properties at the bottom of the box, then choose the 'Modem' tab at the top of the next box that opens and change it to 'Off'.

    Hope this helps.

Another way to turn it off if the above doesn't work:

Find the Extra Settings box, in advanced modem properties of device mangler.
Put in M0L0 (that's M zero L zero). Save and restart.

(Foregoing blatently plagerized from a old post by "Reboot ").:D

Hearing your modem connect to the internet, and hearing your modem send a fax, are things you want to silence only on a temporary basis. Some day you'll be in a situation where you won't know what's working without the sound. Which is why I recommend the simplest and most easily reversible procedure--turn down the volume control on your speakers.

Hey reboot, gotta give credit where credit is due!!!:D

Davott's suggestion about just turning down the speakers has merit too. Simple and easy to reverse. Downfall is, that when you play something on the box that makes sound and you have forgotten about turning the speaker off, you sometimes start looking for problems that aren't there.

If the sound is coming from the speakers all open the volume control applet and mute the line in. Problem solved and you still have the rest of your sounds. :)

Thanks everyone, especially from John b (device mangler) funny but very appropriate. If I'm not mistaken, the sound isn't coming from my speakers but the modem so turning them off doesn't work. I will try out these ideas as soon as I replace my monitor. My wife's monitor went out at her business and I replaced it with our home monitor. I'm replying from there now. Thanks again, I'll report back on how it came out soon.

I have the opposite problem. I get modem sounds (which I like as I know what's happening) but not when faxing with MS generic fax program - ie then there's only silence so I have to watch the fax send window to make sure it's connecting.

I do get a sound from the program when it has been sent successfully.

    I'm using XP Pro.

    Any solution for that?

Are you saying you get modem handshake sounds from
    external (sound card) speakers ?
That's new for me. Usually the screeches come from the internal PC speaker, and the volume can be set via the
    Control Panel / Modem cpl

Sorry I didn't make myself clear.

I get handshake sounds from the modem eg when dialling up an ISP. When faxing via the Windows XP fax program there are no handshake sounds.

The 'fax successful' sound is from the laptop's own speakers.

Are you SURE the sounds come directly from the modem ?
Modems have no speaker or audio card ???
You did not mention in your opening post that we are discussing
    a laptop.
Does the Laptop have a PC speaker AND an audio card ?
    regards

Hhmm. I guess that I was wrong and that all sounds come from the laptop's speakers. It's a Dell Latitude C840 which has a sound card.

Certainly if I dial up an ISP I get a dial tone and then handshaking tones but when faxing nil.
