    Hi

I realise there are endless problems with Word - just looked at the list !

My issue lies with a version which was pre-installed ( I immediately uninstalled this ) I then installed Office XP ( OS Winows XP HE ) Office has Word / Excel / Outlook / Publisher
    ( 2002 )

All the programs with the exception of Word have ' Detect & Repair ' enabled. In Word this feature is greyed out ( disabled by Administrator ( This can only be the Admin. in Safe Mode as otherwise there is just me )

I have come to the conclusion that the pre-installed version has left something behind which has disabled this feature.

I have tried workarounds which hvae not enabled this for me. I was advised ( just yesterday ) 99% of problems with Word are in the normal.dot file. I searched for this & found one for Admin. & one for me in C:\Documents&Settings\ ......

I was told to rename the file to normal.dot old - then uninstall Word & re-install. Word would then disregard the settings in the old file & load the new ones ?????

Unfortunately I was not able to speak to this person today thus do not know what to do with 2 files. Do I re-name both of them. If so do I do it in Safe Mode for Admin. rights ?

I am really afraid of doing something which cannot be repaired thus have not even have Word ....

The only other way round ( the worst scenario ..... ) is to re-install the OS in Advanced Mode & choose not to install Word / Money - I REALLY do not want to have to do this at all.

I have only started to use XP thus am very unsure of Admin. things etc

You can actually delete the normal.dot files as they will be recreated the next time you open Word, without having to reinstall anything.

If this will fix your problem or not I'm not sure of.

Another way to repair Word is to go to the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, double click Microsoft Office XP and select repair rather than uninstall or remove, you'll probably need the installation CD and it will repair/reinstall everything.

    Hi

Thanks for your input. Unfortuately I have tried the second option when the full re-installation didn't work ~ the repair didn't work either !

I don't THINK that just deleting the normal.dot files would work.
( not that I know much about them ! )

The adivce I was given sounded logical until I discovered the two files. I really think the pre-installed Word has something lurking despite removing it completely. Other wise D&R would not be available in the other programs within Office. This is why I don't think it's to do with the version of Word in the suite.

Somehow removing the pre-installed has left D&R disabled. The worst thing I am going to have to do is format & re-install in Advanced mode leaving out Word completely !!!!! I am not sure if it is worth doing this just to enable D&R. I would have to do it if it was necessary for lots of reasons.

I have tried so many things & get so disappointed each time to see the greyed out bit. If I thought renaming & uninstalling Word etc would work - I would be happier but somehow I don't think it's that easy. Even the techs. who supplied the computer are

Thank you for your advice - will have something else to think about now. Hoping sometime to do the right thing !!!
