    Major Geeks
    Their program: REIMAGE

they claim to be able to remove msjvm (MS Java)

They let you download the entire program first and give you a meaningless "analysis"

Then after that they refuse to remove the program until you pay them.

They should state in advance that the service they offer is a paid only service.

People should be advised of this because
    1. downloading programs can leave junk on computers even after you remove them
    2. and because sites should tell you up front the conditions of use.

Major Geeks did not make this program. They are mostly a hosting site for downloads of hundreds of programs. I have used MG for probably 10 or more years for lots of programs. Never had a problem and never heard of anybody else having a problem.

Below is the site for REIMAGE.

MajorGeeks is a great site for downloading freeware & shareware. In fact I download almost 90% of the stuff I use on my computer from there.

You must have clicked an advertisement.

Yeah, it is most likely an advertisement link that you clicked on which redirected you to that reimage website. That ad is not affiliated with MG so I would advise that you don't click on ads like that since most of those ads lead to websites promoting rogue software.

I know but I said most ads not all of them.

Let me clarify, I am basing that statement off my experience when visiting download sites. Most of the time when I'm downloading a program from any download site including MG I see an ad that when clicked on advertises a registry cleaner or a system optimizer of some sort which more often then not turns out to be rogue.

It may not happen all the time but based on my experience I see it happen a lot.

I agree. Got a friend that I sent to MG to download 4 programs. He called me back and wanted to know about 4 different programs. I asked him where he got them from. Figured out he was clicking on the advertisement and downloaded them also. Had him to take them off. Even explained to wait a few seconds for the download popup that comes for the program he was supposed to be downloading.

    Agreed.

However some reputable site should be paying more attention to who advertise on their site.
ReImage belongs to the very same same category as SpeedUpMyPC, Registry Booster etc.
So called miracle tools, which don't really do anything but may harm your computer.

I had very personal experience while testing ReImage.
See here: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=73633.0 (very long thread).
Among other things ReImage representative PMed me and tried to convince me to EDIT my postings so ReImage doesn't look so bad.

I thought it was a pretty funny but a bad attempt all the same for that representative to try and convince you to change your opinion about that shady product.

If the marketing managers/directors of that ReImage program were threatening you to alter your negative feedback of that program in your post, especially since you did some thorough testing of the application, proves that the company is not to be trusted.

If that happened to me I would probably just blow those people off and warn as many members as possible about programs like that.

It looks like I made a mistake.

I must apologize to Major Geeks.

I hope admin can rename this thread so Major Geeks is not sullied by search engine searches.

I think, however, that the correct download links on many sites are set to be deliberately confusing.

I just went to Major Geeks again. I clicked on several different programs in several different catagories. Not one of them is confusing to me. Believe me, I am easily confused most of the time. If before clicking ANYTHING, people will just take a minute to read before going click happy, things would turn out OK probably 99% of the time. Just like that friend of mine that downloaded 4 programs from them and then called and asked me about 4 different ones which were ads that help support MG or other sites.
I am not pointing the finger at ANYBODY, so please don't take it that way.

Yep, but not on MajorGeeks. For most of the software, they give you 3-4 links which are in bold & just below Download Locations. If you click any of these, you should be ok. But keep an eye on the application while you are installing it - it may contain tons of crapware.

Majorgeeks IS a reputable site, however the site's pages are cluttered and can easily confuse people.

Decent free software downloads are usually hosted at several community sites such as Majorgeeks so as to reduce the amount of bandwidth used for downloads at the software developer's sites. (it costs them more money when gigabits of downloads build up) It also gets their products in the eyes of more people.

To offset these costs, sites such as Majorgeeks host the developers' software and they make money from the ads at their sites.

Some of these 3rd party sites are easy to navigate and some are so cluttered that one's attention gets dispersed easily. This is intentional; more clicks on ads = more money for the site.

What makes it worse is those sites don't have full control over the content of the ads, they just allocate space on their pages for the ads (width & height of ad boxes). Thus, a misleading ad could state something like "Your Download Is Here. "

My post in another thread, which led to this thread being created by dispatch trophy stated:
I linked to the download at Majorgeeks because MS does not offer that download anymore. I was weary about what I posted because I knew in advance that dispatch trophy could find the site misleading, which is why I said, "...beneath DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS heading. "

That dispatch trophy ended up downloading something other than intended proves that Majorgeeks clutter can be distraction.

I personally don't dig the site, and experience has taught me how to navigate it. The only reason I used it in my original post is because I know that the actual download is real, and that other reputable sites that host the MSJVM removal tool are few and far between, as can be seen if ones does a Google search for: download MSJVM removal tool
