I recently changed from OpenOffice to LibreOffice 3.4., but find that I am unable to turn off the auto line numbering each time enter is clicke, as this feature causes hard to correct insert of line numbers in addittion to manual line numbering.

F12 should toggle auto numbering on/off

Edit: If you mean Line Numbering then...

Tools->Line Numbering-> and clear the "Show numbering" checkbox.

Thank you for assistance. Document in question is manually numbered at start, in this case date of month 1 to 31 or 1 to 30. When entering information for a specific day, without warning a window is shown and same date again entered ie 23 enters additional 23 directly below. I require to stop this additonal entry. This error is intermittent. I followed your suggestion, but can not find tools> line numbering> numbering check box. LibreOffice 3.4. currently installed.

From your description I'd say the format of the document was incorrect (perhaps use a table?), however if you insist on this format then you should have "Insert Unumbered Entry" in your "Bullets and Numbering" toolbar.
