Problem adding a Printer

I have never added a printer using Vista and I am really having a problem. I have a Dell Inspiron with Vista 32. My printers are Lexmark and are connected directly to a desktop and I share the printers. In XP, it was simple to add and I didn't have to install drivers. Vista is requesting that drivers be installed which I did but I still can't connect. I read on 1 blog something about needing a patch, I don't know what a patch is.Can someone guide me through this, keeping it very simple?

Thanks,
Dee

Are you connected Via USB?

Now that you installed the driver try a different USB port.

I'm moving this to Hardware.

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought your Dell was connected directly to the Laptop. I moved your thread back to networking.

Thanks Scott for moving it back. I haven't had much luck with help in the past with printers issues. Wish me luck this time, I sure do need it.

Dee,
Can you get to any shared resources on the desktop hosting the printer?
When you browse the network do you see the Desktop?

The desktop is homebuilt. I have added several wireless laptops using XP without a problem. I have oher laptops that will print, I have a new laptop that has Vista and this is my problem, I have done everyrhing Vista has directed ne to do and I can't communicate with the printer. Other than calling Dell and paying them to det it up I don't kknow what else to do.
