Trying to set my old home network up and ran into something STRANGE.
When I try to share C; drive, (really all drives), Idon't get the little hand icon. When I clicked the "permissions" button I got a dialog box that stated..
"This has been shared for administrative purposes. The permissions cannot be set"
Tried to stop the share and get this..
"This share was created for Administrative purposes only.The share will reopen when the "server" service is stopped and restarted or when the computor it rebooted. Are you sure you wish to stop sharing C$ ?"
Go into "Computor Management" /shared folders and there is a listing for something called "IPC$" like it is a drive. ????
Any ideas ????? Sounds like I been HIJACKED !!!

Perfectly normal - right click on IPC$ > Properties and you will see '"This has been shared for administrative purposes. The permissions cannot be set" - OK this and in the Properties box comment you see 'Remote IPC'
When you try to share C:\ are you hitting the New Share button on the Sharing tab and setting up a new share on C:\ and then setting Permissions?

yeah did that now it's worse. the 2 pc's don't talk. Never seen this before. Been doin this stuff since Noah's little trip. (I wuz his tech support)
Does this mean you had a problem and are now trying to redo the drive sharing?
However, you don’t state your operating system, so here is the procedure for sharing a drive from XP onwards:
XP
Go to My Computer > Right-click the drive to be shared > Sharing and Security > Click I understand the risks > Put a tick in Share this folder on the Network > Change the name (if you wish) > Tick Allow network users to change my files or leave it blank to give read access only > Apply, OK, etc. to finish.
VISTA (and WIN 7)
To give you unrestricted access across the network, make Everyone appear in the Security Tab. Right-click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management then right-click the drive graphic > Properties > Sharing Tab > Advanced Sharing > tick Share this folder and type in a Share Name > Apply > OK.
Now go to the Security Tab > Edit > Add then type ‘Everyone’ (not the quotes) > Check Names > OK and below it select your preferences, e.g. Full Control, etc. > Apply > Reply Yes to any security message > Keep pressing OK to any ‘deny’ messages > OK, etc. to finish.

Uh yeah There was already a "share" I have a Home network. the problem is i ain't NETWORKING !! Did a "new" share... Same ting no communication between boxes. When I try to map the network drive I can see the box but no drives. Doesn't matter which box I do this on. Results the same.
OS/ XP sp2 on both systems.

Is this an SP2 issue?
On XP Pro you will always get those messages "this has been shared for Admin purposes", but the "share" is really not shared or accessable to other network users yet as no real shares have been created yet. IPC is not a network share, but is there on all XP Pro systems.
On ALL computers:
1. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab.
2. At top of list checkmark "Auto search for network folders & printers".
3. At bottom of list uncheck "use simple file sharing".
On ALL computers:
1. rt click My Computer icon on desktop > rt click C drive > select Properties > Computer Name tab.
2. ALL computers must have the identical workgroup name. Use Change button to change the workgroup name.
On each computer:
1. rt. click My Computer icon on desktop > select Manage.
2. Expand Local Users & Groups > select Users.
3. rt click right frame > select New User...
4. Enter User name + Full name + password > uncheck "User must change password at next logon" & put checkmark at "password never expires".
example:
Comp A user = Joe > add Joe as a user on comp B.
Comp B user = Bill > add Bill as a user on Comp A.
On each computer:
1. double click My Computer icon on desktop > rt click C drive > select Sharing & Security.
2. Click New Share button and enter a Share name > click OK button.
3. Back at properties window click Permissions button > click Add button > where it says 'Enter the object names to select" type the username of the other comp (the User you just added). type the user name, not the full name
4. Back at Permissions window put checkmarks next to desired items (Full Control or Change or Read) > click Apply button.
5. repeat on other computer(s).
You will now be able to map network drives on each computer OR access the C drive of the other computers via My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Your Workgroup Name.
