Cant Share files xp to vista

Hello there, let me start off by explaining my set up. I have 1 Desktop running windows xp sp2 hooked up directly into my verizon westell dsl modem/router. I also have a vista laptop that cannot for the love of god share files to and from the windows xp desktop. the laptop is picking up the signal through wifi. I'm not new to this and i've shared files between the same desktop to another computer in my house through the network before with no problem.

Now i've already made sure that all fire walls are off. I only have the windows firewalls and i've disabled them on each computer. I also have made sure they are on the same work group, enabled the link layer topography on my xp desktop. I have enabled file sharing on my vista laptop, made sure the network is private and that network discovery is ON. i also obviously have folders that are shared on BOTH computers just incase one can see the other and the other cant.

On my xp desktop i do not see any computers on my network at all. (there are 2 other computers but these i have no interest if the file sharing works or not on these) On my laptop i do see them. Im not sure if its because of the fact that my desktop is hardwired to the modem/router that it does not see the other computers on the network or what. But my laptop picks the others up but desktop dosnt. My laptop how ever does not pick up my desktop.I tried using the program networkmagic but when i try to connect to the other computer it says something about a fire wall which cant be an issue because i disabled them. I can ping each computer by ip address and by name perfectly. on my router settings i have disabled the firewall.

What boggles my mind is that when i use Windows Easy transfer program i can transfer files between the two computers but after maybe 10 min of transfer the connection disconnects between the computers. I can share very small files but anything really big it wont finish because it gets disconnected. This proves that there is the possibility of sharing but it just wont work manually.

please help me figure this out because this has been driving me absolutely crazy. Thanks

i looked at that test that you sent me everything turns out fine. I also read the article and the only thing that i saw that would pertain to my problem was the ipv4 offload option in the device manager but that was not listed when i tried to look at my laptop's network card. So i'm still back to square one. The laptop has internet and everything is fine with it just the fact that it cant share. Also like i asked before it you have a computer that is physically wired to the modem is it supposed to see other devices in the network?

If by 'see' you mean they appear in Network Neighbourhood, then whether they do or not can be very hit and miss on a network with no server.

A more reliable way of connecting is to do so directly by entering the address of the computer you are trying to connect to preceded by two back slashes.

\\computer_name

or

\\IP_address

If neither of these works, the next thing to try is pinging the PC to see if there is very low level connectivity:

ping computer_name

and

ping IP_address

It depends... Is it a modem & router? If it is only a modem the answer will be NO. You said

Which signal? You have a WiFi router? Is that the router that the XP computer is connected too?

Reggie B i have tried connecting like that also with no luck. i have tried to connect to the vista from my desktop using that command and from my vista to my desktop. When i do it from my vista to my desktop it says it cannot reach it but when i click diagnose problem it tells me that file sharing is not on which is no true because its enabled on my desktop. It also says something about (SBS). I also stated in my post that i could ping eachother by name and ip with no loss of packets.

Arie It is a verizon westell modem AND router. and the laptop is picking up the Router signal and thats how i get internet. And yes thats the one the desktop is hooked up to.

On the Vista machine, open command prompt and copy/paste this at the command line:

That won't help.

If you go into the TCP/IP properties of the connect on the XP PC; then select Advanced and go to the DNS tab. On that page is an option to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

reggie, I went to where u said but its not in the DNS tab its in the WIN tab. Also its already enabled. Yet on the cmd log it says its still disabled. Im a bit confused as what to do. Also i dont know if this matters but both my computers have static ip addresses.

I think you should try to reset TCP/IP. Enter this at a CMD prompt:

i have fixed the problem i had to go to reg edit and found where it was keeping the netbios settings and it was all set to 0. so i changed it to 1 and now my desktop can see all computers on the network and my laptop can see my desktop. thank you very much for all your help.

I still have a problem though because my laptop cannot access my desktop. And when my desktop tries to access the folder of the entire hard drive it denies the access although the shared documents folders on my laptop is acessible from my desktop. Any help getting my desktop to be able to enter the main (C) Folder of my laptop and getting my laptop to access my desktop hard drive?
