    Hello,

I've got an HP laserjet 2015n; i have it wired to a switch; the pc is wired to the switch; and the switch is wired to the wall network plug.

During installation, i tick 'through network' but windows is not finding it.
In the manual (in the CD), it is said that if the HP software is installed on the PC, i don't need any special configuration to have it networked.
I installed through USB and it printed.

but i need it to be installed through the switch to have other PCs using it (without having the PC usb wired on); pls advise.

    thank you

The easiest way to install an HP 2015 and (unless you have Active Directory and the printer set up to use it) most network printers I've come across, is to create the printer as a local printer, but set it to talk to Standard TCP/IP port instead of LPT1.

    In XP:
    1. First set the printer to use a static IP address (see note below about doing that).
    2. Open the Add new printer wizard
    3. Select Local printer and deselect the "Automatically detect and install my plug and play printer" (you don't want to use plug and play here).
    4. Next screen Select "Create port ", and then "Standard TCP/IP port" from the drop down.
    5. Enter the static IP address of the printer in the box "Printer name or IP address ". The system will automatically generate a port name as you type - leave this as suggested by the system.
    6. On the next screen use the "Have Disk" button to locate the drivers (you'll need the CD the came with the printer in the system to do this)
    7. Then follow the rest of the wizard through.

To set the IP address statically, you first need to select an IP address that does not clash with those being given out by your router. So log into the router and look at the DHCP settings. That will show a range of addresses being given out. Pick an address outside this range.

So say my router is 192.168.1.1, and it DHCP is set to give out 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200, I might select 192.168.1.2 for the printer. Don't forget that the printers IP address must be in the same subnet as the router (as a rule of thumb keep the first 3 sets of numbers the same as the router and just alter the last one).

To set HP 2015 printer to use a static IP address you first need to log into it. By default it will use a DHCP address given out by your router. So you'll have to determine the IP address that it is given. If you hold down the green button on top of the printer for 5 seconds, a configuration page will be printed, including the network configuration with the IP address. To log into the printer enter the IP address into your browser.
    1. Go to the Networking tab and change the setting to use a manual IP address.
    2. Enter the IP address you want to use.
When you press 'Apply', you may well lose connection to the printer (as it is no longer at the address you originally typed into your browser. If you enter the new IP address in the browser - you should then be able to access the printer again.

Yep, That was the fork in the road where you made the wrong turn. :)

Go back and select local printer and follow the directions Reggie Posted.

    Hi again,

Well, there were 2 manuals in the CD; How to install and how to use; You would agree with me that the answer to my enquiry would be in the How to install, but it was not; It was in the 'how to use' which told me how to know the IP address of the printer (pressing on the Go button for 5 seconds print a document with the IP address), then when tick 'through network' in the install process, I write the IP address and all worked fine.

I wonder why printers manufacturer don't write down that 'one sentence' how to in the How to document they provide with the printer!!

Actually the install disk should have automated the whole process. That's puzzling it did not.
