Some routers have IDS built into them, most home routers do not. IDS can be as simple as a software firewall that notifies you of attempted security threats to complex setups like a dedicated comp that acts as a firewall IDS system w/ logging of all pertinant info, email notifications, etc.

Simple Intrusion Detection Program

You can install a simple program called network magic as long as you have a router.

It has an intrusion detection option and as well it builds a map of users who have logged on.
There are programs as well - but i cannot remember the names

Using a router or firewall with IDS built in is the better option
