Going Wireless ??

Hi all!

I have a DSL modem router with 4 ports. I purchased a wireless - G Access Point. I have a desktop in which I have installed a wireless - G card. It is running Windows 2000. I have a notebook with a built-in wireless capability. It is running Vista Premium.

I am able to get onto the Internet with each, however I can't communicate between computers (I want to network the desktop printer which is connected via USB) and may want to backup the notebook to the desktop.

Is it possible to do? If yes, could you please point me to a source of information or explain it?

Thanks
Don

Yes, it is possible. The fact that you can access the internet on all PCs is a good start as it demonstrates that you have connectivity through the network. It also shows that the wireless system is working and that you don't have to worry about that.

So what you need to do is set up the PC for file and print sharing. The best starting point for this is probably Microsoft's guides to setting up a home and small business network:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...g/default.mspx

and

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...p/homenet.mspx

For Vista, this would be a good start:

First, thank you for taking the time to try to help. Unless I have missed something, nothing within those links explains how to setup a network that has a Windows 2000 machine, a XP Machine and a Vista machine.

Not sure I am either being clear or I am not clear.

It seems to me that the protocol change in Vista is the issue. If I remember correctly, the only way to get an XP machine to work with a 2000 machine is with the NetBEUI protocol. Vista doesn't have it.

So while the links explain how to make each operating system work as a network, I didn't see where it explained how to combine the operating systems.

Thanks for your help!!
Don
