I am looking at adding WiFi but I want to have it set so that it asks for a password to connect. I have done a little reading on Google but mostly I see expensive solutions or hard stuff like using a RADIUS server or signing up for a hotspot service. I just want to have a free wireless spot in the basement for people to use when they come over but have a password on it so that only people I tell the password to can get connected. Is this something that the wireless router determines? If so, is there a good router to purchase that would allow me to set it up so that when someone walks within range not only can I have WEP enabled and s on, but it says something like "enter username and password to connect" and then they can get online? I dont want people to have to subscribe or anything like that, just have a simple password to connect to the internet. Maybe I am not asking the right questions, but if anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated. I have worked with WiFi before and seen how to set up WEP and MAC filters and all that but no where have I seen how to make it ask for a password to connect. I am assuming that it is pretty much product specific, so I wondered if there was any product out there to do this.

According to Linksys, their WiFi products support WPA and WEP which allows you to password-protect your wireless network and prevent unsanctioned use by random passers-by.
With WPA would it allow me to just set a password that any wireless device including handhelds would then see a password screen to log on to get internet access, or does the hardware have to all support WPA or something?
