I use BT Yahoo Broadband internet but on my dads PC it doesn't seem to be working.I've checked to see if there's a dial-tone (which there is),and i've tried re-installing the driver for the ADSL modem,but that hasn't worked either.I've also tried rebooting the pc with all non microsoft services stopped but that doesn't work either.anyone else got any ideas?

Try the following and post the contents of the text file c:\config.txt you will create with the last command.
Click on start, click on run, key in cmd, and click OK. This will open the 32 bit command window. Then from the command prompt, type in the following and press the Enter key at the end of each line:

i received 2 errors.the /release and /renew commands both came up with the same error message...."No operation can be performaced on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected"
Several possible causes for the 'Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected' problem but for sure he can't get out until that is corrected.
I really need to see the rest of that config.txt file to get a better idea of what is happening.

Are the two of you connecting from the same place? If so, describe the network.

i pasted everything that was in the config.txt file.i asusme i've done something wrong then?
the dial-tone...when we connect to the internet (got 2 computers in the house) we both have an adsl modem (speedtouch 330),and we have to create a connection and then select connect (obviously,we don't need to create a new conenction everytime).if there's no dial tone,then obviously my line would be dead...so we connected a phone to the line to listen for a dial-tone,which there was 1.
the 2 computers are located in different rooms,1 downstairs,1 upstairs.they are NOT networked,although,we're going to get a router in a month or so.both have phone sockets in the room so the modems just plug straight into them.the telephone wire from outside enters the house in the garage where then both wires from the upstairs and downstairs connect upto.
I was hoping to get some information from the IP addressing piece of the ipconfig file following the MAC (physical) address. If it is simply not there, I'll have to dig around since that would be a new one on me. Some folks decide that information should not be posted (fear of an attack of some sort) and simply don't post it or mask it with xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or something. I though maybe that was what you had done. And FWIW, if the information left the PC vulnerable, we wouldn't ask for it to be posted.
Normally XP will either be set up with static IP/netmask/gateway information or else will try to find a device to assign the values. If it can't, the usual would be for it to assign itself an IP address and subnet mask from a specific address range and that would indicate a possible cause of the failure.
If the information is simply missing, it could indicate a problem with the IP setup itself where something had gone wrong with the network card installation.
How are you connecting from the PC to the modem? This looks suspiciously like a cable problem. Can you try a different cable?
modem has 2 cables coming out of it.1 is the cable to plug into the phone line,the other is a usb cable which plugs into the pc's usb port.its funny you said that because the printer wasnt working yesterday whcih also plugs into the usb.my dad put it into another usb port and it worked.going to try it myself

nope,i didn't leave the information out.just tried it again and to no avail.the network card symbol comes up with a cross.apparently it says a cable is unplugged for a connection.if the network card isn't working,would it effect the modem from working?
Ahhh - USB. I'd sorta been assuming regular ethernet cards & connections. This may be very simple or it may be impossible - USB networking is great when it works but horrible to troubleshoot.
If you are using USB ports on the front of the case, try using one on the back.

i've shifted my adsl modem into the front of the pc and it works now.cheers
We are seeing more and more problems where either the front or the rear USB connections won't do a particular job and the others will. Speculation is there may be too little power to one set or the other. I really dunno but glad to hear a move fixed you up.
I agree with Newt's comments - good news the problem is fixed.
Surprising though that moving to the front USB ports fixed the problem. The rear ports tend to be connected directly to the motherboard, whereas the front ones are connected via leads to a jumper. I would have thought that the front ports would be the more suseptible to problems. It just goes to show that you can't take anything for granted with computers!
