Networking problems

Can anyone help please

I`m trying to set up a 2 computer net work running 2 nic card and crossover cable.
The host computer is running WinXP pro and the client is running Win98se

I`m using an alcatel usb ADSL modem on the winxp box and thats connecting to the net no probs.

When I try to access the network on the xp box I can see the 98 box but not access it.
While on the 98 box,it doesn`t see the xp box.

I have disabled all firewalls and any 3rd party firewalls that are running.

I set the network up using the networking wizard on the XP machine, which macks a set up disk for the other machine/s.
Installed that and nothing

The host (xp)machine has a network ip address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the 98 machine is set up to automaticaaly assign ip address.

When i try to connect to the 98 box i get this error

code:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

\\************ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions. The network path was not found.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both computers are set up for full access (read/write)

I just can`t seem to get the 98 box to see the XP box.

Any ideas???

I don`t want to get a router as I had it working when I had win98 running (too unstable).

sford

hope it is xp pro

1 make sure both computers have the same workgroup
(hope you are not setup as a domain)

2 logoff the win98 machine then log back on using the exact same name and password you are using on the XP (must be exact!). If it is administrator then use that on the 98!

see whut u hve now?

Your "client" PC has a blank default gateway. Therefore it has no clue where to look for getting on to the internet. You need to set that value to 192.168.0.1.

And you blanked out the PC names (why???) but as a general rule, the names should be all alpha/numeric characters, no spaces or other symbols other than possibly an underscore _ or a hyphen - and 8 characters or less is safest.

As to the LAN connection, you must be using a logon and will either need to be using the same username/password on both PCs or else put the PC1 username/password into the users section of PC2 and vice versa. Right-click My computer, manage, users & groups, users section and add a user.

Not essential but with XP-Pro boxes, I suggest going into windows explorer~tools~folder options~view and removing the check mark by "use simple file sharing" which is probably the bottom item.

Thanks Newt That seems to have sorted most of it except for when I try to connect to the net with oulook express and MSN messenger it fails to connect.

Is there any other settings I need to change to enable this?

If you can connect to the WWW with IE then you have a proper connection.

Can you connect to the www using Internet Explorer? If so do not tinker with the general network setup.

It then should have to do with the setup of outlook express. Ckeck you pop and smtp settings.

Known issue with MSN Messenger v3 and NAT. Needs some tweaking to work at all so your host would be fine and your client wouldn't work. M$KB Article Q278887.

If the client PC is running a firewall, could also be ports issue. MSN thing wants TCP 1863. OE wants 25 & 110.
