Win XP desktop doesn't recognize or find the internet through an ethernet wired connection via Motorola Surfboard Modem.

The unit has a wireless card and we were previously able to connect to an available wireless network in the retirement community where we live. However, the signal was very weak and we kept losing the connection - sometimes we would stay connected for 10 or 15 minutes - usually less. Decided to go with the wired modem but now I can't connect to the internet. Here is what I have done so far:

Checked the modem with another computer which connected with no problem.

Used the New Connection Wizard with no luck.

Used the Connection Troubleshooting option on the IE web page that failed to render which eventually told me to contact my system administrator. In my case I guess that would be me?

One thought I had is that the existing wireless card may be interfering. Before I started doing any disabling or uninstalling of that, I thought I would post the question here first. Any thoughts?

Is your wired network hardware recognised?

    Start->Run->devmgmt.msc

Click the + next to Network adapters (if required) and let us know what is listed inside.

Disable the wifi card via Network Places. (it can always be reenabled later)
Windows will stick to and try to use the last present adapter until it has been disabled.

Even when both adapters show up as connected to the LAN, Windows can only use one of them at a time, and it will use the "last known connection that has been in use ".

    You may have to reboot.

Wildfire - These were the entries for Network Adapters:

    *Intel(R) 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection
*NetGear WG311V3 802.11g Wireless PCI Adapter
(The NetGear had a red X on it which I assume means it was disabled)

TonyT - I think the paranthetical above covers what you suggested.

I enabled and disabled the Wireless a couple of times with rebooting but still can't access the internet. I do get the small, double computers that show up down by the clock indicating a connection. When I mouse over them I get a message "Connected 10/100 ". When I click on properties the dialog box indicates that we are connected and shows how long and other info. But still no browser connection.

    Any other thoughts?

I am assuming you have your own service w/ COX in Springfield?

If the modem is connected directly to the computer do this:
    1. disable wifi connection in Network Properties.
    2. open LAN Properties > double click TCP/IP > Advanced Button > WINS tab > Enable netbios over TCP/IP > OK out.
2a. Obtain IP address automatically & Obtain DNS server address automatically > OK out.
    3. shut off comp.
    4. power off (unplug) cable modem > wait 10 seconds.
    5. power on modem > wait until it synchronizes.
    6. power on comp.

To test connection to cable modem:
    1. open browser.
    2. enter this address: http://192.168.100.1/ > press Enter.
    3. Note the Receive level, Transmit level & modem status.

    TonyT and Wildfire,

Thanks for your input on this thread. I have been unable to contact the lady I was helping with this problem so I am going to mark it as solved. Tony, I was able to follow most of your most recent instructions about a week ago but still wasn't able to connect. Her son is supposed to work on it shortly - he is the one that set up the original networking with several computers involved.

If anything new occurs or a final fix is made that I am aware of, I will ask Arie to reopen this thread or I will start a new one.
