Hi all, first post here, and I could use some help please.

I have two computers, one desktop directly connected to a Belkin router and one laptop.

    My laptop connects fine.

Yesterday, my desktop and laptop both downloaded some automatic Windows updates and I also lost power (probably turning off the laptop, but maybe not, if the update automatically turned it off before the power loss).

Now my desktop cannot connect to the internet with the message "limited or no connectivity ".

I have service pack 3 (so I don't think it is the service pack 2 problem I've read about). I've also tried quite a few of the basics:
    *Unplugged router
    *restarted computer
*asked the computer to reassign an ip address both in the internet connection area and in the command prompt (which is when I get the DHCP mesage)
*plugged the computer directly into the DSL connection in the wall (using the cable for the router that I presume must be good because my laptop can get on the net using the router).
*and a few other fixes that I can't remember

Please, any and all help would be very appreciated.

Thanks so far! Here's what I got:

I have Norton and Superantispyware for virus protections.

That link was very helpful in diagnostics, but I couldn't solve it by following that info.

When going through the steps provided, I did the Net Diagnostics and got the quoted information below: (if I need to show you more of that report, just let me know...I only opened up the menus for the "problem areas ")

Beyond that, I checked ipconfig and got:

    And your link says this:

But then I don't know what to do next. I tried using microsoft's "Reset TCPIP helper" tool, and restarted the computer, but the problem remained.

Anyway, here is the Netdiagnostics log:

What does ping 127.0.0.1 show (run from the command prompt)?

Seeing that your connection doesn't identify a default gateway, it looks like:

    • The TCP drivers are corrupted
    • The network adapter is not working
    • Another service is interfering with IP

Try running this command: netsh int ip reset

I ran that command and it seemed to do more than netsh int ip reset.

(The computer appeared to be processing the request in that it took some time and the message about connectivity went away).

However, no log was generated, the connectivity issue remained (connected at 100mb/sec but 0packets sent or received), and restarting the computer brought back the start bar icon of "limited or no connectivity ".

I also tried running it with C:\resetlog.txt at the end, which also did not generate a log.

Have you tried connecting to a different port on the router?

Have you tried a different cable?

Make sure that both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically is set on the TCP/IP properties.

Well, I used the cable that is connected to my router to connect the computer directly to the wall (i.e. bypassing the router).

That didn't work. I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that that is the same type of cable, and that since the router is working to deliver connectivity to my laptop, that that cable is "proven" working. (Again, I don't know for sure, this is just my line of reasoning).

I have also tried a different router port.

Yes, both the "obtain automatically" options are checked.

You should try a different cable to connect your PC with the router.

Also: make sure any firewall is stopped for now. Double check Windows Firewall, click Start > Run and type: Netsh firewall set opmode disable

I retried winsock xp fix and the microsoft tcp/ip fix programs.

Tried another cable, to no avail.

I did all of the above with the firewall down.

    No luck.

Then I have nothing else to try.

    Format & reinstall.

If that doesn't work, it will suggest a hardware failure.

    Darn.

Well, thanks very much for your help anyway!

    Have a wonderful day.

At least I now know it was nothing I could ever have hoped to fix on my own. That alone saved me countless hours.

    Thanks again!

OK, one last thing to try which I forgot is a repair install:

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
