linksys wrt54g setup

    Hello,

    I am trying to set up my linksys wrt54g. I was using this router on different set of computers before and it had its own setting. Now i am trying to set up a new wireless network. I tried once before following the setup instructions included in the linksys cd. It did not work. So i reset the router using the little button at the back. Now every time i plug in the router into the power outlet, I only have the ethernet lights (1-4) and the internet light on. At the end of the instructions cd, when the modem is connected to the router and the router to the comp, it is only supposed to light up the power and wlan lights.

    i have pressed the rest button again, but no success.

    Is this a problem with the router, how do i reset the router to original settings to restart installation.

    1. Do not use the Linksys CD to setup the router.
    2. Use a Web browser to setup the router.
    3. When a pc is connected to the router by cat5 cable, the port LED will light up on the router. Wifi comps that connect won't cause any LEDs to light up.

    YOU MUST USE A WIRED CONNECTION TO SETUP A ROUTER.

    0. Unplug the modem.
    1. Press the reset button on router and hold in for at least 10 seconds (until the router lights start blinking).
    2. Unplug the router, wait 10 seconds, plug back in.
    3. Connect comp to router LAN port using a cat5 (ethernet) cable.
    4. Power on the router (plug power cord back in) & wait until router stablizes.
    5. Open your Web browser.
    6. Type this address: http://192.168.1.1
    7. Do NOT type a username, the password = admin. (all lower case)
    8. Click on Wireless tab & name the SSID & setup wifi security. (write down the WEP key or WPA passphrase), use Channel 1 or 11..
    9. Click Administration tab > set a strong password (write it down).
    10. Use the Save Settings link at bottom of pages where you made changes.
    11. When done, unplug router.
    12. Plug in modem & wait untill it syncs with the ISP.
    13 Plug in router and wait until it syncs with the modem.
    14. Connect wifi computers.

    Note: If you don't have an extra cat5 ethernet cable you can temporarily use the modem's ethernet cable to setup the router.

    Hi Tony,

    thanks for the quick reply. As soon as i plug in the router into the power source, the ethernet port lights come on (1-4) and the internet light comes on. they do not blink. This is even without any of the cat5 cables plugged in. I have held down the reset button for about 30 secs and still there is no change. the other lights on the display are the power, DMZ and WLAN, none of these lights show any response whatsoever. there is this cisco systems log/button, that used to light up before, but now doesnt anymore. The 4 port lights and internet light are solid and green, no blinking or anything.

    Is this is a hardware malfunction? It was working (the lights were blinking et al.) two days ago.

    Do a 30-30-30 reset. If this procedure does not work then the router is bricked (hardware failure, use it as a door stop). I had a Linksys BEFSR81 do that to me about 4 years ago, all light up and dead.

    Turn the router on and press the reset button for 30 seconds then while you keep holding the reset button unplug the device and wait 30 more seconds then replug the device and continue holding for another 30 seconds. This procedure will reset a working Linksys router to factory defaults.

    If no joy, time to get a new router.

    thanks tony, looks like i will have to go shopping, the 30-30-30 didnt work. is there some way to fix the hardware or is it at this point hopeless.

    Not worth trying to fix the hardware. Chipsets burn out from time to time. Easier to just get a new router. FWIW, you can usually find WRT54G routers on craigslist pretty cheap.
