Resolved Adding Printer to Wireless Laptop

I have installed a new router and now must must add my printers to my wireless laptop again. This was a simple procedure before but now I cannot add the printers. I have tried on 2 laptops without sucess, Have Dell inspiron With XP and Dell Lattitude with XP. Need some help. Thanks.

 

What type of printer is it? Does it have wireless capabilities? If not, is it installed on a machine hardwired to the router?

 

Deester, first you have to be able to see the printer on your wireless computers. Did you go to Control Panel, Printers, and then attempt to add the printer? The printer must be switched on when you try this.
Sometimes in the printer wizard you have to choose the option which seems like the wrong one. When the printer is recognized, under properties you will see that a port has been added under the tab "port ". I have 3 wireless laptops using a network printer that is wired into the router, and each time I tried it there was always a problem for a while. Stick with it and try different things in the printer wizard. Make sure you know the name of the printer that is being used to identify the printer in your network. You should also know the address of the printer like 192.168.1.xx in your wireless network. That may help.

 

I am at wits end, I have tried every thing I know to do. I even wired straight into to the printer and downloaded the drivers. My computers are not recognizing the network printers. I have done this many times before and had no problems and I don't know what's different this time. I have followed all the advice you guys have given me. Both computers have been connected to both Lexmark printers before. Help.

With XP, by far the simplest way IMO to install a network printer on a peer to peer network is to create a custom port.

• Start the Add New Printer wizard
• At the "Local or Network Printer" screen select "Local Printer" and take the tick OUT of the "Automatically Detect and Install my plug-and-play printers ". Click Next
• At the "Select a Printer Port" screen select "Create a new port" and select "Standard TCP/IP port ". Clicking next will start the "Add standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard "
• Click Next and enter the TCP/IP address of the printer in the "Print name or IP Address box ". A port name will be automaticallly created in the name box as you type in the IP address - leave this as it is (don't modify the automatically generated name). Click next to continue.
• Follow the rest of the wizard through as you would normally

 

Reggie is telling it exactly right. I just installed a network printer yesterday just like that. you have to create a port by choosing the option of a local printer.

 

Thanks for the directions but I don't know where to find the IP address.

Yesterday when I installed the printer and followed the instructions from the Installation CD, at one point it told me the IP address before it was necessary for me to use it. If you do not get an assigned IP address, you can assign one like: 192.168.0.X where X can be any number that does not conflict with an already assigned number and which does not exceed the number of ports that your router allows. Do you know how to access your router information?
What kind of printer is it? Are you using a network cord going from the printer to the router? Has a port already been assigned to the printer that you do not know about? When it asks for a port, browse to see which ones have already been assigned. Did your printer come with an install CD? Do you have a users manual?
I had much trouble until I did a few of these but the important part of the install of the network printer is the assignment of a port on your router. That info is critical to setting up other computers on the network which will use that printer. Hope this helps. Do not give up, it will eventually work.

 

I have installed several of these and it was very simple. This time I cannot get my computer to recognize the printer. I followed the above directions after finding my IP address, no luck. I need to print something that is only available on my laptops and I can't connect either one. The only thing different is I have a new router, I don't know whether this has anything to do with it or not. I had a Netgear before and now I have a Linskys.

I am on my second Netgear. Did your printer work on the Netgear and now does not work on the Linksys?
They changed the IP address of the Netgear Router from
192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1.
I did not realize this at first and could not access my printer which was set to 192.168.0.25. I had to reconnect the old router and change the address of the printer after accessing it
to 192.168.1.25. I was worried there for a while and lucky that the old router still worked, although intermittently.

 

I am getting no where with the printers. I can't understand why it is so difficult time. Any more wprds of wisdom, I've tried everything that you have suggedsted,

What is the make and model of the printer?

 

Both printers are Lexmarks. I have made a little progress since my last post, I do have 1 out of 3 printers printing. I have accessed the router and verified the IP address. I have compared all properterties in all 3 computers and they are all they the same. The computers are now picking up the printers when I browse for them but will not connect.

Are you limited by the number of ports that are available to use. I just got my second printer printing but when I try to get my third printer connected to the ports, none are available. Right now I have 2 laptops connected to 2 printers and want to connect # 3.

 

What model of Lexmark printer?

Sorry, the Lexmark site is defeating me as far as useful information. In fact I can't find a 6150: only X6150. Also is the 600 the WinWriter 600?

Do both have network cards/servers built in or are you using another device to act as a print server?
