    Hi,

I connected AT&T DSL modem to the D-Link router and then connected the laptop and desktop to the router. I am connected to the Internet just fine.

When I try to go to the router's ISP 192.168.0.1, I get At&T set up page.
How do I go about setting up security on the router - any workaround?

Would appreciate any help as I am a complete newbie in this respect.

Plug the router directly to the computer > connect to it using its ip address > change its LAN ip address to 192.168.0.2. Reconnect all. Access the modem via its ip address and verify it is set to handle the pppoe. Connect to the router and set it to "obtain an ip address automatically ".

Hi Tony - So happy to see a little light at the end of the tunnel, BUT

I do have the computer connected to the router at present. Do you mean I must remove the modem and do I connect the computer to the port which is all by itself? Please clarify how to do what you say exactly, please.

    So grateful for your help.

Unplug the modem from the router.
    Shut down computer.
Press reset button on back of router.
    Power on computer.
    Connect to router using 192.168.0.1.
Change the router ip address to 192.168.0.2.

    Thanks Tony,

One question, the computer doesn't get plugged into the router's modem port? The problem I am having is that I don't have a connection when I unplug the modem and all I get is a page Not Found, Cannot Find Server, etc.

I'll try again and see what happens.

Connect your computer directly to the router using one of the router's 4 LAN ports. Leave the modem disconnected for the time being.

    Open a web browser.
Yes you will get a page not found message because your not connected to the internet.

In the address bar of the browser type 192.068.0.1 and hit enter.

You will be prompted for a user name and password.

    User Name: admin
    Password: blank (nothing zilch empty)

Go to the LAN setup page and change the router address to 192.168.0.2, click save settings which will make the router reboot.

Plug your modem into the WAN port on the router. Then type 192.168.0.2 in your brouser and run the setup for the internet connection.

    Hi Scott -

I get nothing when I type in 192.168.0.1. All I get is Page cannot be displayed, Server Not Found, Connection Was Reset.

What am I missing? The instructions are simple enough, but it is not working for me. I am trying the laptop to see if I can get a wireless connect but nothing works.

    Hello Ann,

I am not able to assist much here but I note that in post 6 the instruction was "...Then type 192.168.0.2 in... "

Then in your post 7 you say "...I get nothing when I type in 192.168.0.1... "

I have to wonder if you have miss typed the code ???

Yes I did, Tony. BUT do I have to reset the router with the router on or off?

fairwind - I have to start with 192.168.0.1 in order to access the D-Link set up page. I have been doing this hours on end both yesterday and today without ever connecting to the set Up Page. once I am in the D-Link page, then I change the IP address to 192.168.0.2 and save.

I am going crazy trying to resolve this. Can there be any logical reason that I can't get into D-Link's page? Can something be wrong with the router?

I certainly know what that feels like. Thanks for your response Ann.

Look, I get into the D Link web page with this http://10.1.1.1 The problem I have is that I have to do this setup every day ( !!?? ). Hope that helps a bit.

    1. Before you change the router ip address, reset the router to defaults. Obviously, if the router has no power then you can't do anything with it, can you? (if remove the plug to TV can you change the channel?)

    2. After change the router ip address you will from then on need to use 192.168.0.2 to access the router.

    3. What exact model dlink is it?

I think we need to step back and punt here. Sounds like there may be a connection issue from the PC to the DLink. Bad cable maybe?

Can you post the results of ipconfig /all when plugged into the Dlink?

Post back if you need instructions. They are all over the place in these forums but I guess we need to make a sticky.

Well there's the problem right there.

Your Network card in your PC has it's properties set to static IP. And, It's the same IP as the router! That will never work!

Right click on Local Area connection 3 and select Properties. Then highlight the TCP/IP protocol and click on the properties button.
In the TCP/IP properties check off Obtain IP address automatically.
Do the same for DNS below that.

When I went into TCT/IP the IP address shown is 192.168.0.64 not the .01 that showed in ipconfig\all. Also the Optain IP address automatically is already not selected.

Also sounds like that computer may have 2 LAN connections.
