Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

    I've been having a very hard time trying to fix this wireless connection on one of my family computers. I have 3 computers set up at home. All three are connected to a SMC Barricade 7004VWBR router.

    One day the wireless connection just stopped working on this computer. I tried a bunch of different stuff I had found on this board to try to fix it and none of it worked plus I ended up corrupting some system files. I formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows XP and expected the connection to work again. This was not the case. I could connect to the internet via a cable but not through the wireless adapter.

    Currently, I am running Windows XP Professional 2002 Version SP1. I don't think any firewalls are up on the computer. I have installed the drivers for my wireless adapter.

    The wireless adapter I am using on this computer is a TrendNet TEW-424UB v3. I tried my D-Link adapter from another computer but I got the same Cannot connect to DHCP server message when I run/cmd ipconfig/release - ipconfig/renew.

    Here is what I have tried so far:
    In internet protocol properties (TCP/IP) properties I've ensured that obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.

    I ran netsh int ip reset a second time and the log was empty.

    I've read on this board that I should ping and see the results (I don't really know what the results mean):

    I installed SP2 from the link you sent me (thx btw I was trying to figure out where to find SP2). I tried connecting with the Windows Firewall on and off and both times I get the same message:

    Limited or no connectivity
    Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request timed out.

    Set the AP to use NO securty.
    Config the troublesome wifi connection as such:

    rt click My Network Places > select Properties
    rt click Wireless icon > select Properties
    select TCP/IP Internet Protocol > click Properties button
    checked Obtain an IP address automatically radio button
    checked Obtain DNS server address automatically
    exit all

    Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services
    set the following to Automatic and Started:
    DHCP Client
    Network Connections
    Network Location Awareness (NLA)
    Wireless Zero Configuration
    exit

    Do NOT use 3rd party wifi connection software such as the type the often accompanies a wifi card, use Windows to handle wifi connections. If have 3rd party software then do:
    rt click My Network Places > select Properties
    rt click Wireless icon > select Properties > Wireless Network Tab
    checked Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings
    Remove all Preferred networks in list if exists
    exit

    If can then connect using NO security, try setting the AP to use WEP security. If joy on troublesome adapter, repeat above and remove your wlan from the preferred networks list. Then use another comp to set the AP to use WPA security. Try again.

    I tried all that and both wireless connections did work when the security is disabled. When I re-enabled my 64-bit WEP security neither wireless computer would work (even the one that was fine). So right now I have the security disabled.

    Do you have any idea what this means? Is it my router that is causing the problems?

    Config AP like so:
    WEP 64.
    No shared pass phrase.
    Open network.
    Enable ssid broadcast.

    Remember, you need to make changes to the AP from a wired computer only.
