I'm using an ADSL 2wire gateway and it's been working fine for the past year.... Although, the question really isn't about if my router is broken. It's more about why do I still have DSL even though my phone has no dial tone?

A few days ago, my router started to disconnect pretty often. After restarting it, I went to check my phone to see if it was working, and sure enough, I could not hear no dial tone. All I heard were static noises...

I used my cell phone to call my home number and for some reason it had a busy signal.... so I can not make or receive any calls from home.

So I'm wondering, why does my DSL still work(even though it disconnects every 1-2hrs, sometimes every 10mins) even though my phone has no dial tone?

    ----
    Also..

This question is off topic but, is it safe to leave my router running 24/7?

    Thanks.

well tariz its not like that , basically the landline we are using has double data transfer capabilities , its also used for telephone and on other hand also used for DSl services . its not necessary that if u r telephone is not working , ur DSL should not wrok too , the solution is simple call the help line of ur landline service provider not the DSL provider and ask them that my number is busy mean my dsl working fine by phone is dead , they will just simply patch ur line from back end in minutes issue is resolved , i faced the same problem :) so nothing to be worried , both dsl and telephone can work same at the moment or can only one of them at the moment . i hope u got the point.

djnomi is right in that with ADSL the telephone carries two signals. Low frequencies are used to transfer voice, and high frequencies to carry data. However, as they use the same line a lot of the traffic shares the same systems. In my experience, it is fairly unusual to lose voice connection without losing data connection. It says to me that your telecom provider is having problems with the voice equipment in their exchange - you need to contact them and report the fault as djnomi suggests.

I think it is worth making this point as djnomi's post suggests that lack of voice has no relevance to data, whereas in my experience the two are often closely related: it is usually one of the first things to check - if your ADSL data connect fails, check you voice connection. If that is down too, there is probably something wrong with the line. If voice works then start looking at your data kit (the router or modem). However, as will all general practices, there are examples that don't follow the norm, and your example is one of these.

Sounds like the phone is off the hook for whatever reason. (relay stuck at CO) (Burglar alarm modem stuck)
If the phone is off the hook the DSL will still work.
