I have a small home network - two computers and an ADSL modem. Both computers are running XP Pro. The computer that is connected to the modem connects to the Internet fine. Internet sharing is turned on. Each computer can see the other and file and printer sharing works fine. The client computer cannot get connected to the internet. I have looked for all similar threads here and elsewhere and tried a thing or two but no success. It is probably some simple setting I don't know about.

Windows Firewall is off. Zone Alarm is running only on the host computer. (I tried turning that off too but no change.)

On the client I ran a diagnostic ipconfig (as "ipconfig /all > text.txt). The results were:
    Windows IP Configuration
    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : library
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Mixed

And on the host computer the results were:

Local area connection 2 is the one on the host that goes to the client. Sympatico is my ISP.

    Thanks for any help.

I'm not a great fan of internet connection sharing. Using a router is easier to configure and much more reliable. An ADSL router would do this job for you well.

However, as a starting point it would would be good to work out if this is a connection problem or a name resolution problem. I expect the latter.

Can you ping 142.177.1.2 from the "client" PC (192.168.0.2)?

Gave up, bought a broadband router

I bought a D-Link DI-604 broadband router. I got both computers onto the internet and printer and file sharing. Setup process was *not* completely clear but I managed. The price was right - only $28.47, taxes included, Canadian funds at Staples.

Internet sharing should have worked - it offended me that it didn't - but why flog a dead horse? Just get on with things.

It does work, I have used it when there are no other viable options.
One example would be sharing a cell phone connection that only connects via USB.
It's clumsy and not for the novice or even intermediate user. But it works. ;)

If there were any other options I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

I'll bet that has something to do with the problem.
Maybe IE is trying to use this connection to surf.

I'm glad you got a solution - and a good one at that.

That way leads to a lot of anguish. There are things that just don't work like they should. It almost always better to stop banging your head up against the problem and find a different way to achieve the solution.

Worry about finding a solution rather than insisting that a particular tool gets you to that solution. There's always an alternative way. You'll have a far simpler life in computing if you keep that in mind.
