I have a new D-link router 655. My network is okay and my laptops connect fine, internet etc. When I enable wpa in my router, my laptop and other computer try to connect but a error message pops up on the taskbar -
Windows was unable to find a certifcate to log you on to the network ____SSID. (my network name).

I have played around with this for a while and don;t want to go back to an open network. Any help is appreciated.

OS- win XP pro. on all.

Seems, you are enabling the wrong type of WPA - the WPA-Enterprize, that uses the certificates for user|AP authentication.

You should be enabling the WPA-PSK the "preshared key" type of protection.

Check the configuration of your router.

Windows was unable to find a certificate to log on to the network SSID

I have the exact same device (D-Link DIR-655) and I have the same problems. I use the WPA-Personal on that device.

This could also be caused by setting the encryption to WPA-RADIUS instead of WPA-PSK on the client radio. Both the router and the client are trying to find a RADIUS server with which to authenticate your system.

Switch the encryption to WPA-PSK (pre-shared key) on both ends and it will work.

    Found solution

    Hello Arie:

Thank you for your suggestions. Your solution at the link is impractical for any normal user. The MS file extracts, but doesn't run on its own, the description doesn't match the extracted files and manually copying the required DLL leaves me with the question: which one of the 13 target directories to copy it to...

Also, your previous tip about the Radius client does not apply, as there is no such option on the D-Link. I don't even know what a Radius client is. The options that the DIR-655 provides are:
Security mode: None, WEP, WPA personal, WPA Enterprise (I chose Personal)
WPA mode: Auto (WPA and WPA2), WPA2 only, WPA only (I use Auto because I didn't know if my laptop can do WPA2)
Cypher type: TKIP, AES, AES+TKIP (I use both)

Anyway, browsing this issue some more, I also found some other link, which finally solved the problem: Users of Windows XP and the DIR-655 need this Microsoft hotfix: KB893357. See this link for further instructions:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/expert/bowman_wirelesssecurity.mspx

but it's easy: download that hotfix and install it. Reboot and the wireless will instantly connect without error messages or disconnects.

That hotfix is not critical, hence, not forced by Microsoft update, but it seems to be essential to make WPA2 work. The Windows wireless listing now shows WPA2 enabled access points with additional text: "Security enabled wireless network (WPA2)" - note the "WPA2" in parentheses.

    J

    Thanks again!
